Tonight I went to eat with two friends at Sweet Basil; we had one
of those Entertainment buy-one-get-one-free coupons.

When the bill came, the waiter had subtracted the smallest of the
three, rather than the second highest, so I asked him to subtract
the other one. He said he didn't know about that stuff, and got the
manager.

The manager explained that in the 'fine print' it says that if >2
people eat, the smallest value at the table gets subtracted. While
I didn't like this, it was no big deal (only a $2 difference), but
being a mathematical type, I thought I'd explain to him the illogic
of this:

Me: "But you realize that this means that by bringing you more
business, we get a smaller discount..."
Him: "Well, we're pretty crowded tonight, I'm not short of business."
Me: "True, but if, for example, just one of my friends had come,
we would have bought less and gotten a bigger discount."
Him: "Listen, I'm tired of this hassle, and [angrily walking away]
I DON'T NEED YOUR BUSINESS."

Like I said, I had not even raised my voice or anything, and as we spoke
I had been getting out my wallet to pay. Yet this manager would act
like that over a question involving $2.00?!? I assumed that the store
owner would want to know about his incompetent employees, so as the guy
was walking away I asked his name.

"You don't need my name. I'm the owner, and I don't want your business."

But if the owner of a restaurant is
that rude, I'm certainly not going back.
