I *really* like the Ambridge Bike Shop, but they are pretty far away.
Kraynick's (on Penn) is also very good for repair work, tune-ups, parts,
etc. Avoid Pittsburgh Pro (Murray).

Kraynick's, on Penn Ave in Garfield.
Very nice guy, with the widest selection of parts in town.
Not obnoxious like the people (well, Angelo) at Pgh Pro.

I used to live a block from Pgh Pro; I would ride my bike two miles to
Kraynick's instead. (Now I'm a little more accepting though; one person
there has treated me well).

Pgh Pro Bikes on Murray Ave did an ok job tuning up my mountain bike.
I don't know if they're better or worse than anywhere else; they just
happened to be only a block away when my chain ring fell off.

(This is also the place where I usually buy parts, again because
they're close. A typical conversation with the sales staff: "Hi, I
want a new front derailleur for my mountain bike here." "Do you want
an expensive one or a cheap one?" "What's the difference?" "Expensive
one costs more." I don't know if this means they are unusually honest
or just unusually uninformative.)

Applegate used to swear by Kraynick's but I've never had any work done
there myself.

Scott,

Try Gerry Kraynick's bike shop in Bloomfield. He is a really nice guy,
and runs a really cool bike shop. I have used just about all of the
local shops and I highly recomend Kraynick. I also highly disrecomend
Pittsburgh Pro in Squirrel Hill.

Yes: Kraynick's on Penn Ave.
(or Ambridge Bike Shop, but that's way out in Ambridge, surprise, surprise)

No: Pgh Pro

(look at files in /afs/cs/user/jdg/bike/ for further details)

Scott--

Here's a hastily assembled rundown of local bike shops, based on my experience.
For more information and opinions, you might want to ask on the ``cyclists''
bboard. Last time I checked, the consensus favored Ambridge overwhelmingly.
(Drawback: it's a forty minute drive.)

Shops I'm not familiar with, but have heard good things about:

Dirty Harry's, in Oakmont (mountain bikes only)

	Kraynick's, in Bloomfield.

5003 Penn Avenue, Garfield. He's a reasonable person. Do not go to
Pittsburgh Pro unless you want to conform, deform, and explode.

Kraynick's Bike Shop on Penn Ave is reputed for good work and cheap
parts. I've never had any work done over there, but the parts
are really cheap and the owner is very helpful.
