Subject: VCR Repair Recommendations

Harry,

below are the replies I received in response tomy post about
vcr repairs. Also, I called around to about 10 different
places. Most had the same deal:

$20-40 to give you an estimate for repair
$50+/hour labor
plus parts.

The total bill would be labor plus parts minus estimate.
Labor was warranteed for 30 days, parts for 90.

A few places had a one price deal:

$40 for small jobs
$60 for medium
$80 for large.

You would know which category you were in from the $20-40 estimate,
which would be deducted from the final bill.

By word of mouth, I found out that most repairs are simple:
you can usually just replace your own belts, rollers and
springs and that takes care of most problems. I was advised
to pick up a SAMS (?) manual for my model, which would
help me with this and other repairs. For parts, try an
electronics store or order from MCM. I found no vcr place
that would sell me the parts. I haven't made the rounds
at electronics stores yet.

good luck to anyone with vcr problems!

I had my CD player repaired at Serv-U-Service on Butler St., and was
pretty pleased with them. A friend of mine took his old CD player
there, too. They looked at it and told him it would be cheaper to get a
new one, and didn't charge him anything. So they seem reasonably
honest, at least.

I just recently had very very good service from Vidtech in Kennedy twp.
Alot of places wouldn't touch my machine because it is an industrial VCR not
a consumer machine. This place not only took it but had it back to me, FIXED,
the next day! They were very polite and quite reasonable in their fees.

The place is:
Vidtech
1776 Pine Hollow Road
McKees Rocks, PA 15136
331-6626

My guess is that it is about a 20 minute drive from CMU.

Good Luck.

Two fellows around Pgh. are excellent. I know. I used to be the
third one.

They are, in no particular order;

J Rudy and associates in Millvale. $40.00 deposit and ask for
written or phoned estimate before the work is done.

Audio Video Service Co. in Monroeville. $35.00 deposit on VCRs
applied to $65.00/hr flat rate on repairs.

Both are listed in the phone book. Both are excellent places to do
business with. Rudy might get the work done a little quicker than A-V
because they have more technicians -- a lot of things they get done
the next day. Call them both and ask questions. Ask about the
warranty on repair work. Most shops give 90 days if they are worth
anything.

PS If your deck is Sony brand name, then take it to Wexford Sony
repair outlet, or better yet, throw it away and buy a Panasonic.
Sony has stopped supplying replacement parts to independent shops.
I think that sucks.
