Hi,

Here are responses I received from a post to rec.bicycles. The question
was "what is a good bike maintenance book, for somebody starting off?".

John.

ps. Harry, how are the wife and kids?

The best beginner's bike maintenance book is "Anybody's Bike Book," by
Tom Cuthbertson. All the information is really solid and well-explained,
the drawings are helpful and clear, and the tone is conversational and
amusing. I can read this book even when I'm not working on a bike.
I (and probably the rest of the net) recommend it.

You might check the FAQ -- and summarize what you find if you don't see
anything in the FAQ!

I particularly like ``Richard's Bicycling Book'', Richard Ballentine,
Ballentine press.

It's small enough to be readable, assumes you want to know a bit about
each of the philosphy, science, and workings of bikes.

Bicycling magazine has two books in print. One is more of a glossing over for
extremely general stuff - the title doesn't come to mind, but I've heard it's a
little too vague. The other _complete guide to bicycle maintenance and repair_
is the one that I have. I've found that it's really good in some places and in
others it's lacking. I'm sure it would do for starting, but there are a lot of
things that I've learned working on bikes taht aren't in there.

Good Luck,

I often pick up Bicycle guide's book from the local library when I
am doing any major maintenance. I would recommend it as well. It
seems to me that I saw them advertising a 2nd edition of this book
in 1991 which would probably address all of the recent technology.
