02-Feb-87 12:24 Edward Czeck@faraday X-C sking

Does any one have a copy of "American Youth Hostel's Guide to Cross Country
Sking in South Western Pennsylvania" which I may borrow for a few hours.
Additional can anyone recommend good locations for X-C Sking, Bovik is
empty on this subject, and replies will be forwarded to him.

By the way I've tried Schenley, Frick and South Park, and also Laurel Ridge
(which had > 12 inches of snow on Saturday !)

Thanks Ed Czeck

I have Sierra Club's guide to XC Skiing in Western PA (which is what
AYH sells, too, I think), and DER's guide to XC skiing in PA State
Parks. I can bring them both in for you if you'd like.

Laurel Ridge State Park usually has the best snow in the area, and it
lasts the longest. Hidden Valley started running a warming hut and
rental concession there this year, but you also now have to pay a $4
trail fee. There are also 3 miles of lighted trails for night skiing.
Even if there's no snow in Pgh, Laurel Ridge is probably okay.

Laurel Summit (east of Ligoneer off Rt. 30) also usually has really
good snow. Lots of scenic trails, which are well maintained by the
Nordic ski patrol (volunteer, but they appreciate a small donation).
There's a warming hut and rentals available there, too. There are snow
mobile trails near by, and you can sometimes here them, which is
annoying, but they stay off the ski trails. The trip out to Wolf Rocks
and back is really nice.

Hidden Valley also runs a concession in Kooser State Park (near the HV
downhill ski area). I don't think it's nearly as nice as the previous
two in terms of trail conditions and scenery.

There is a nice trail system in Bear Run (near Fallingwater), a park
run by the Nature Conservancy. They have a big barn with a fireplace.

Ohiopyle also has some nice trails. I haven't skiied there, but the
old railroad grade is supposed to be a nice trip. Both Ohiopyle and
Bear Run are only worthwhile right after a big storm - because of the
lower elevation, the snow doesn't last very long.

The police chased us off the North Park golf course two weekends ago,
and the designated XC trails are under heavy tree cover, and don't get
much snow...

Hartwood Acres also has some very pretty trails, though not very long.
A nice place to spend an afternoon if we get lots of snow, and it's not
too far away.

		have fun! -m-

Hidden valley is pretty good when they have snow. Farther afield,
Canaan Valley in W. Virginia is supposed to be very nice (I've never
been there in the Winter).
