Subject: TV reception without cable

My question:
>What is yje expected reception of the main TV
>five chains (PBS, ABC, CBS, FOX...) in the hills of squirrel hill and
>greenfield. What equipment will be needed for a fair reception.

I think that TV reception varies widely from one part of squirrel
hill to another, depending on how many hills are in the way. We are
fairly high up, and get the following stations:
2 KDKA CBS
4 WTAE ABC
11 ???? NBC
13 WQED PBS
22 WPTT Independent
29 Video Jukebox
40 ???? CBN
53 ???? FOX

They generally come in fairly clearly, but we only have a small 13"
black and white TV so perhaps we can't even detect some of
the fuzziness. This is without an exterior antenna of any kind,
just the one on the TV. You may be better off asking people in
your immediate neighborhood.

We live around Denniston/Wilkins. We use a "rabbit ears" antenna on
top of the TV which is on our ground floor. Reception of NBC and
CBS is good, ABC is viewable but not great, WQED (PBS) is good,
WQEX (PBS sort of) is medium, WPTT (who knows) is poor, FOX is
good. We do sometimes have to re-arrange the length/orientation
of the ears - no one arrangement is optimal for all channels.

Our house is quite high up - but I don't know where the transmitters
are.

Concerning TV reception in Sq. Hill area.

Depending on location, you might even get away with rabbit ears, at
least for the VHF channels (2, 4, 11, 13). Fox is on 53, and is more
problematical.

All the transmitters except 4 are located generally to your west... a
small beam headed that way would probably not be so directional as to
make 4 (which transmits from McKeesport to the southeast) an
impossibility. I used a four-element (VHF) from Monroeville with
adequate to excellent results on all but 53.

Hope this helps.
