We like a fellow called Wesley Gill. He is available by calling
Schroeder Galleries; they act as agent. They call him, he calls you and
sets up an appointment. He is a member of the guild of piano technicians,
and not only tunes but can do any major or minor repairs. He tunes
acoustically so that the piano "sounds right" rather than being absolutely
in pitch (this is to take into account the nonlinear response of the ear).
We've used him for years and have been happy with the results. Our
piano is ancient (1893) and cantankerous, and he is able to deal with it.

They are listed as 'Schroeder's Fine Organs and Pianos' (which is not
what the sign at the place of business says...oh well) 322-9300.

There is a lovely retired Italian man who tunes most (or all) of the
pianos at CMU. Problem is, I can't remember his name. But I used
him to tune the Steinway baby grand in the ballroom for our dept.
winter party and he is very professional and uses good electronic
equipment. He doesn't over-charge either.

The information desk at Skibo should know his name because he comes
there quite regularly - either that or the music dept. people. If
you can't track him down, send me mail and I'll look through my files
and try to find his name.

You might also try calling Volkwein's music store (on the North Side)--
the store is a Pittsburgh institution and has a good reputation- but I
don't know any of their tuners.
