I stayed at the Abington Hotel, around the corner from the Empire State Building
(numbered street 1 block lower than the Empire State bldg, and a subway station
is several doors away on the corner) and it was only $40 a night for a double
room. Most other hotels there are over $100 a night! The Abington was actually
pretty decent, except that there were some shady character types out on the
street nearby in the middle of the night. They seemed to be minding their own
shady business though. I'd recommend calling the Abington. The guy at the desk
grew up in Pittsburgh and was very friendly. I seem to have lost the number
but 212-555-1212 Information will have it.

p.s. there are a couple of excellent, cheap, 24-hour Korean restaurants right
across the street from the hotel, and several more around the area. Super hot
food, better than anything in Pgh. and much cheaper. It's turning from a degenerate
neighborhood into a Korean neighborhood.
