Hi Jennie,

I am very happy with my doctor, Margaret Morton in Greenfield. She is
not a gynecologist but a general practicioner but she still does all that
fun gynecological stuff. She is nice, funny, laid-back, easy to talk to,
and competent. She is also covered by UHN health insurance.

Jennie,

I've heard excellent reports about Dr. Carol Simmons (McGee Hospital).
I've not been to her yet, but am scheduled for an appointment on Nov. 2
and will let you know what I think once I've met her myself.

I have heard of other excellent GYNs, but they're IMPOSSIBLE to get in
to see. Dr. Chris Tyndall and Dr. __ Rutman are both supposed to
fantastic, but my luck with getting in has been nil. When I called
Dr. Rutman's office (about a month ago) the next available appointment
was for the end of May, 1996. :(

Happy hunting!

Michelle

P.S. I don't know how bad the physicians are at student health here, but I
had a MISERABLE time with them at UT. They were nothing short of sadistic.

Jennie,

Dr. Thompson has been my dr for 16 years. He delivered both of my children
and actually saw to it that I got pregnant when I wanted to. Oh, that sounds
bad. I had problems getting pregnant. I have no complaints. He's very
professional. The people who work in the or with him at magee always have
good things to say about him.

His office is in Oakland. The number is 683-5200.

I have a few friends who are drs. and they know of my doctor and they like his
ideals and ethics. As do I.

My ex-partner used Margaret Morton as her regular doctor, including
exams, and was happy with her. Morton's partner, Donna Knupp, is used
by a number of friends whos eem happy with her. Their practice is at
the end of Murray Avenue in Greenfield.

I've used the Nurse/Practitioner (Sue?) and Kaminiski & Sterns and found
that satisfactory altho the price
was no cheaper for the N/P.

DO NOT USE Weigel of Moss, Weigel & Shaeffer. He has
a charming manner, but almost killed my girlfriend
and almost damaged my son during childbirth. A total
asshole when it comes to an emergency.

gynecological services (and midwifery) in a very comfortable setting - at
least from what I have seen of it :-).

My wife goes to Dr. Ellen Stewart, who has an office in Oakland.
She's been quite happy with Dr. Stewart.

Since she's pregnant, my wife and I have also had to meet the other
OBGYN doctors in the practice. Who's ever on call will deliver our
baby. Dr. Frondutti and Dr. Katz (both men,if that makes a
difference) are also very pleasant. In fact, in my honest and male
opinion, both men were less busy and more patient and sensitive than
Dr. Stewart.

Jennie,

Dunno what your health insurance constraints are.

I _really_ liked Lorraine Bevilaqua (621-7575, office
in Oakland); I think there's a message to Bovik with
more details (several years old).

A while back, I had to switch because she's
not Health America. John Fisch is also good,
but his main office is in Monroeville (372-0645).

Hi, I'm a lecturer in Computational Linguistics (philosophy). My gynecologist
is dr. Filipek, with Oakland Gyn, 3380 Boul of the Alleys, 621 7575. I
went there because he and other two doctors in that practice had been
recommended to me by Martha Pollack (Pitt CS faculty). I actually would
have preferred one of the other two, a Dr. Bevilacqua and another whose
name I don't remember, because they're both women. but I had an urgent
condition, and the two of them were too busy. I liked Dr. Filipek very
much, he's friendly and did his best to explain things to me. I remember
Martha also mentioning somebody she didn't like, if you want I think I
have the full references at home, I can dig them out.

best,

My wife uses Dr Gray at West Penn. Her associate, whose names escapes

there are female, which would be important, if I were female.

I use Dr. Michael Fakovec of Smithfield Medical Associates.
The number is 471-2111.

He's my GP but he also does annual gynecological exams, and his
office staff has always been good about handling records and
appointments and stuff.

For future reference is also a Keystone and HealthAmerica
primary care physician.

If you have HealthAmerica, you can use your primary care provider or
their gynos. I go to Dr. Diegel at the Sterling Medical Center
(in Oakland) and I like her alot. I use her for my annual exam
including PAP, etc.

I also discovered that the BirthPlace in Shadyside- a freestanding
birthing center affiliated with West Penn Hospital (and also covered
by HealthAmerica, by the way) - gives well-women care. The place is
very child-friendly, so those women with children might like it there.
They have midwives, whom I've often had good experience with in general,
although I haven't been to these particular midwives.

Well, those are my $0.02. Good luck!

sue.

----------------------------

i've gone to a clinic in east liberty called Allegehney Women's Health
center. I think that they are exellent because:

1) it isn't a hassle to get a female doctor (i think the're all female)
2) they are very good about answering questions and check to see if you
have any questions and seem sincerely interested in ensuring that you
know what's going on and agree with the doctor's actions
3) they also ensure that you have the info you need to make any
decisions that need to be made and let you make them. I couln't imagine
anyone there taking a condesending tone with a patient there.

this is unlike at many doctor's offices including health services where
I've had situations where a doctor will basically dismiss birth control
questions with answers like ... "oh you're so young, you should be on
the pill, here's the persription" (after i explicitly said that i didn't
want the pill) or "you can't really be in a serious long term
relationship, so you should use condoms [i.e. i'm going to ignore your
requests for a diaphram since that might encourage you to forgo the
condoms]"

btw.... the clinic does do abortions so i guess it could be possible
that patients going for a checkup on the wrong day could get harrassed.
I haven't heard of demonstrations there but i'd hate to get hrrassed or
even shot for a pap smear.

Jennie,

I'm a native of Pgh and only moved to State College this past August.
I know of a highly recommended gynecologist at St. Francis Medical Center. His
name is Gary Bergman - he's listed in the white pages. I don't know how busy
he is but it's worth a call. I've been seeing him for a few years and have
had no trouble.

Hi Jennie,

My wife seems happy with Oakland OB/GYN on Blvd of the Allies right
across from Magee. The practice is composed of mostly women doctors,
including Hazel, Bevilacla(?), Hoca (+ a couple of others). Carson, who
is a man, is also in the group. They have evening hours and are affiliated

Hi, so these were Martha Pollack's recommendations (for Oakland Ob/ Gyn,
I sent you address and phone # in a previous message).

(I guess the assumption is that they're all equally competent.)
Doctors she liked: Renata Hoca / Lorraine Bevilacqua / Steele Filipek.
She didn't like: Don Carson (I think she said he had no bedside manners,
he may have delivered her son); Dr. Hrvos (or Mrvos?): good but old.

As mentioned, my gyn is Dr Filipek, and I liked him a lot. As I was
worried for something potentially serious, he explained everything to
me, the exams etc, he recommended a lab that was convenient and I also
quite liked the people there; and then followed up with me when I got
the (good) result from the lab.

Hi Jennie,

I go to Chris Tyndall at the following group:

Chris S. Tyndall (OB/GYN)*
Walter L. Shaffer
John E. Weigel Jr.
Shadyside Place
580 Aiken Ave. Suite 420
Pittsburgh, PA 15232
Work: (412) 681-7388

I like Chris a lot. There is another woman there whom I like too,
assuming she is still there. I don't like Shaffer much (he delivered
David and threatened repeatedly the possible need to induce early).
Wiegel is also a nice, sensible person (he delivered Keith).

Jennie,

Maybe too out of the way for you (Sewickley), but my doctor is great!
Dr. Susan Floyd. I understand, however, it's now pretty hard to get an
appointment with her, but if you can get in with another doctor there,
you would probably be happy with them also. The office is Moraca,
Wharton and Floyd Assoc. (there's another new doctor there too, but I
forget his/her name). Their number is 741-6530.

Years ago, probably 1989 was the last time, I used to see a doctor in
Magee who I really liked also, Dr. Charles Kremser. I cried when I
couldn't go to him anymore -- because I changed insurance -- but luckily
I hooked up with Dr. Floyd. I don't know his number, but I'm sure he's
in the book. His office is on the Blvd. of the Allies side of Magee,
through a separate entrance with separate parking on that side of the
building. It's really convenient.

Let me know if you want to talk more about either of these two. Good
luck with your search!

Marce

Jennie,

I asked her and she couldn't spell it, but her doctor's name at McGee
was pronounced like "SOF-ruh-noff." Maybe you could call them direct
and get the correct spelling.
