13-Mar-85 15:26 Jerry Agin@CMU-RI-FAS Medical advice?
I have had a problem for several months with a heel spur, probably as a
result of my running activities. The doctors at Penn Group Health Plan have
been very little help, so I'd like to find a specialist better prepared to
deal with running-type injuries. I know very little about this. What kind
of doctor should I be looking for? Is there anybody in particular you'd
recommend?

Dr. Agin:

I know of an orthopedic doctor who looked at my knee when I had an
infusion in it (i.e., fluid on it) and who is very good. His name
is Dr. Swensen, phone number 621-2141. He is with a group of other
doctors at Orthopedic Associates?? (I can't remember the exact name
right now) in the building on Forbes Ave. which houses the Parkvale
S&L, near George Aikens. Don't know if he handles bone spurs, but
you might want to check with his office. Two notes though: 1) he
is not inexpensive (my one visit totaled $80.00) and it took me
a month to set up an appointment. But he did cure my ill.

Jerry,

I had/have a heel spur and ended up seeing someone I was pretty happy
with (on the recommendation of a friend who was also a satisfied customer).
Since I've been doing little running and physical activity lately
due to general laziness I can't claim a perfect recovery, but the pain
I had is certainly gone and has stayed gone for the past year or so. I
had some shots (which I know you are generally supposed to avoid but
was convinced were not the bad kind in this case) and had some
orthodics made which I do still wear. I saw a Stanley Bosta of
Allegheny Podiatry Associates. They (he and the others in the office)
all have taken various special courses etc. in sports medicine and seem
to be generally helpful. Good luck. -- Elaine

I have the same thing you have. I went to the Sports Medicine clinic at St.
Margaret's Hospital, in Aspinwall (just across the Highland Park Bridge).
They havea team of specialists. First, I was given a series of x-rays
which cost about $27. Then I was examined by a physician and a physical
therapist. I don't know whether podiatrists were present. I said I thought
it was a heel spur, but they said that the x-ray showed no calcification, so
they diagnosed it as plantar fascitis, and inflamation of the bundle of
ligamants called the plantar fascia as it is inserted into the heel. They
gave me a profile of the victims: men over thirty, and older women. They
did not recommend a change in shoe, nor venture to discern the cause: it
seems that the cause is unclear. I was told to do two variants of the wall
pushup as a stretching exercise: one with straightened knee, one with the knee
slightly bent (in both cases, one foot at a time). They also told me to do
an ice massage for about 15 minutes. They gave me, but did not insist I use,
aSpenco arch support. They said the more I run, the longer it will take to
heal, but continued use, even racing, will not cause a trauma. They did not
want me to mask the pain with aspirin.
You may also want to go to a bookstore and browse discreetly in some books on
sports injuries.
I've had mine since August. Racing inflames it. It doesn't bother me during
a run, but the pain increases later. It is worst in the morning, upon getting
out of bed. I haven't run for a month, and it is getting better very slowly.
I know of no other specialists in athletic injuries of the foot. If I find
anything else out, I'll let you know--if I remember.
                                     -- Lee

I don't have any specific doctor to recommend, but podiatrists tend to
be good for this sort of thing. They also tend to be better than your
average orthopedist.

I have notoriously bad ankles and so have seen a couple of doctors
about them. The most helpful was an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Janeway,
whose office is in the Aiken Professional Building (next to Shadyside
Hospital). He seems to have a good understanding of sports-related
injuries.

Another good place that I have found is the Falk Clinic. The problem
there is that you never know which doctor you're going to get, but most
are young and have an excellent handle on sports-related problems.

			Good luck,

When I had some trouble with a knee a while back, my family doctor told me
he could give me the name of a physician who specializes in running-related
problems. As it turned out, there was nothing really wrong with my knee, and
so I never needed the name. I would be glad to ask my doctor the name of
this physician, if you'd like me to.

Jerry,

I think the doctor you need is a good orthopedic surgeon. I'd like to
emphasize *good* here. I broke my ankle a few years ago in a sports-related
injury, and the first surgeon I saw (at a Kaiser HMO, which is similar to
Penn Group if my understanding is correct) was a real bozo who wasn't
up-to-date on the latest techniques, and didn't seem to give much thought
to the fact that I frequently participate in athletics. It turned out that
I got three more opinions, all of which agreed that I needed surgery. I
had the operation done by a surgeon who did work for the Denver Broncos
football team, and my ankle has since fully recovered. In this sort of
situation, second opinions are very helpful.

I recently called my doctor in Denver, and he recommended a guy named
Ferguson here. There are two orthopedic surgeons named Ferguson in the
phone book; I think Albert Ferguson is the one he recommended, but I'm
not sure. I believe that the surgeon my doctor recommended does or used
to do work for the Steelers. If you like, I can find out for sure which
one was recommended, because I have the name on file at home.

Good luck!

Try Graham Johnstone (M.D., orthopedic) in Oakland. He was recommended
by our family physician as the "sports injury (feet)" man to deal with
an old ski injury to Jane's ankle, and he seems to have done well by
her.

Jerry,

I also used to suffer through Penn Group's incompetence in the area of
sports medicine. I finally got out (Westinghouse offers a choice). My
best care of running injuries has come from Dr. Carl Stanitski in
Oakland. I haven't been to see him in over a year and heard a rumor
that he is spending more of his time (all of it?) on Pediatrics. If
this is so and you cannot see him I know several runners at
Westinghouse who have had this problem and can probably get other
recommendations.

				Good Luck,

I had a similar problem to the one you described on the bboards.
Dr. Kretz on Craig street in Oakland prescribed an orthotic
insert which fits inside the shoe. He took a mold of my feet and
sent it to some company which makes the device. The purpose of the
orthotic is to restrict the motion of the foot from pulling the ligament
attached to the heel. It has worked very well
for the past few years. If you have trouble finding his phone
number I will to find it for you.
Good luck.

Jerry,

I don't know how far you are willing to travel, but me and my family have
had excellent experience with a podiatrist in Ambridge. His name is Dr.
Nalli, and he is on 4th Street in Ambridge. I'm sure he is in the phone
book. That is about a 30-45 minute drive (non rush-hour) from CMU. He
treated me and my two brothers for various problems while running on the
high school teams, as well as a number of our friends.

If you need better directions, or more detailed information, let me know.

John
