Subject: local health clubs

Harry, below is a summary of local (I asked for those with monthly membership
east of Oakland) health club informaton I received from many helpful people
in the cmu community. I thought I'd pass it along to you. Enjoy!

To all you "slugs", "snails" and "slobs" (well, _you_ said it!)  (^;

Below is a compilation of the information I received from many helpful
people. Most of the postings were from enthusiastic members of Club One
and a few others were also recommended. I've listed whatever I was told
and I've quoted occasionally.

Due to the large response to my postings instead of exercising this
weekend I'm sitting in front of my terminal writing about it! Maybe if
we all join together we'll get a group discount!  (^;

Several people mentioned memberships for sale. As I am looking strictly
for something monthly these aren't for me, but if you are interested let
me know and I'll pass your name on to those who offered.

The Jewish Community Center

>It is also an executive spa, and the installations are incredible.
>Memberships vary, from the club membership (lowest rate, no towels, med.
>locker, no tanning and no raquetball) to Gold membership (towels, large
>locker, etc.). The Gold membership also allows you to tack your wife/husband
>in for free, and has a renewal rate of ~ 50.00 a year after it expires.
>I think they must have seasonal memberships.

Health Haven

>There is a new club on Liberty ave in Bloomfield called Health Haven,
>which is getting a full circuit of Nautilus equipment. Monthly
>membership is, I believe $25. My yearly membership cost $165, but that
>was a special offer that ended last month ( I don't know what the
>current yearly rate is). There's no pool; it's just a hole in the wall
>above West Coast Video, but they do have sauna, whirlpool, aerobics
>classes, and a good set of free weight equipment.

The Racquet Club
in Monroeville

>Did anyone mention "The Racquet Club" out in Monroeville? I would guess
>that they have more facilities than any club in Pgh. All the usual AND
>an indoor pool, outdoor pool (in summer), restaurant with big screen TV,
>tennis courts, and members that aren't snobs. You pay for all of this
>but I've found it worthwhile. I thought that because it was an expensive
>club, people would be a bit snobbish. The opposite is the case. People
>go there to exercise and have fun. There are aerobics classes, basketball
>leagues, tennis leagues, racketball leagues...

>I joined for the tennis -- overall the club has the biggest concentration
>of good tennis players in Allegheny.

And last, but not least, our very own CMU:

>CMU has a facility called the Caber Club, located on Margeret Morrison. It
>has one of the most complete sets of Nautilus I have ever seen. It is NOT
>Spa Lady, however. There is no Jacuzzi, steam room, bar, etc. As far as
>swimming is concerned, CMU has a pool, and it is free. It
>costs $175 for a year, $37 for 24 non-prime-time visits (before 5pm, I
>think), or there is a monthly rate of about $18.

Enjoy!!
