Summary

All the individual responses are listed below. Jeff Cohen, isn't taking
any new patients at this time. We ended up going to Alan Berman who is
recomended 3 times below. That decision was mainly made because we got his
name first. He seems reasonable and Bonnie is doing better. Chuck Yahr also
had 2 recomendations. The rest you can read below.

Gary,

I'll just second Bovik's recommendation of Jeff Cohen (681-4747). You might
ask francesmary (fmm@cs) directly. She has looked in to several different
chiropractors.

I highly recommand Dr. Eric A. Segal of Shady Hill
Chiropractic Clinic. He's right by the Giant Eagle on
Shakespeare street.

phone number 362-7795.

Hope she gets some relief

I and some other folks in the department use Alan Berman in Greenfeild.
He seems very competent (as well as I can judge) and is the nicest
medical type I have ever dealt with. I first went to him when I had a
similar problem and he fixed me right up. He also is very helpful
dealing with the insurance issues. He is open this weekend and his
number is in the book. Tell him I sent you.

I strongly recomment Dr. Marcia Kass. Her office is on Craig St., and she
can often acommodate emergencies (I first went there with a friend from
out of town). Her number is 681-9767.

Try Chuck Yahr, 422-4300, if you are convenient to Squirrel Hill.
Corner of Murray and Phillips.

Gary,

I know of a good chiropractor in Forest Hills, his name is Nemanic. He's in the
book. He's really great. He used to be our chiropractor before we found someone
better.

So now for the one who's even better. The problem is he's probably too far away
from you. He's on Rodi Road in Penn Hills. He's an OSTEOPATH - which is even better
than a chiropractor. His name is Dr. Walter Beam.

I think she'll get help if she tries either of these people.

I like Dr. Alan Berman, on Murray Avenue in south Squirrel Hill. He'll
often take people without appointments, so she should call him today.

I have very high confidence in Dr. Alan Berman, 422-7005. Tell him I
sent you. Many many folks in CS go to Dr. Berman (he says, "What is it
you *do* over at CMU computer science, anyway??")

Try Dr. Charles Yahr. He is located at 2200 Murray Ave., phone is
422-4300. I have been going to see him for about 1&1/2 years. He is
excellent. Very friendly, takes the time to explain what he thinks is
going on, what he is doing to fix the problem and why it should work. I
also found him very thorough. The first exam probably is very extensive
and includes x-rays which he uses to diagnose your problem and to ensure
that you do not have a problem which would contra-indicate normal
chiropractic manipulations. In addition, he is very good about
recommending changes in your daily habits (they way you sit, sleep,
etc...) and excercises that will help. I have found this aspect of
chiropractic care particularly appealing. They do not just attempt to
mask symptoms but help you cure the underlying problem if they can.

Call him today and I'll bet he'll be able to see you today. He also has
Saturday hours. If you call the receptionist who answers is Crystal.
Tell her I (Steve Hoover) told you to call.

Good luck and hope your feeling better soon,

Steve Hoover

I strongly recommend John Wachter on Filbert Street in Shadyside.
Besides being excellent in his treatment, my wife and I have found him
to be honest and pleasant. I am especially pleased by the fact that
he never tries to make you receive more treatment than you really
need! Unfortunately a very common ploy among chiropractors.

He's quite accomodating as far as schedule is concerned. You should
be able to get an appointment asap.

Hi,

I've used Alan Berman in Squirrel Hill and I like him. He fixed some
problems I had with my neck, and I now have range of motion that I
haven't had in years, and my almost- daily migranes have basically
disappeared.

Bruce Horn recommended him to me. Others in the department use him.
He's on Murray, one block past the Greenfield Giant Eagle. His phone
number is 422-7005. Hope Bonnie feels better soon.

He may have retired, but several years ago Herbert Flynn (in Oakmont)
helped me get a long standing intractable problem under control.

From: Sandy Esch <Sandra_Esch@VEGA.FAC.CS.CMU.EDU>

Hi Garry,

I mentioned to Bonnie,Thursday, when I talked to her about a Chiropractor
I highly recommend.

His name is Dr. Philip Frost 531-2303 He's on West Liberty Ave in Dormont.
About 3 miles from the Liberty tubes. I'd be happy to give you exact directions
if you need them.

I've had tremendous results from him. One time I was scheduled to have my jaw
joint replaced. I was told that the x-rays they took showed that my jaw bone
had worn away. I went to Dr. Frost told him my problem. He felt that my jaw was
just out of alignment. In three sessions he had my jaw back in place and I
haven't had a bit of trouble since.

He's reasonably priced and takes his time. You can count on being there at
for 30 minutes at least but usually it's more like 45 minutes. Not because your
waiting around to be seen, but because he believes in making sure your relaxed
by using heat treatments, ultrasound and massage before actually working on
you.

I've been to (not fooling) at least 12 different chiropractors, He's the best
one I've found so far.

Tell Bonnie I hope she feels better soon.

Take care.
Sandy

I saw your posting about Bonnie John's back and felt that I should suggest
she try physical therapy. My wife is a physical therapist specializing in
orthopedics and has worked with a great number of back patients. A good
physical therapist will not only address the near term of back pain and
dysfunction but also try to understand what is causing the back pain and
work with the patient to modify lifestyle or habits to prevent future back
problems (e.g. correct posture, exercise program, working environment and
habits, etc).

I would normally recommend my wife but she is in transition between jobs and
you need someone now. I asked her if she could suggest a physical therapy
office to help you. She recommended Oakland Physical Therapy Associates on
Murray Ave in Squirrel Hill for back problems. You must have a physican
referral (a prescription) before one can be treated. It is the law. Once a
physican gives the prescription, the patient can go to any physical
therapist they please. Good luck.

This is actually a second-order recommendation since I haven't gone myself
but I plan to. These two were recommened by my dentist whom I trust:

  Dr. E. J. Stegman 963-1144 Dorseyville Road

  Dr. Smith 243-6676

Good luck
