Ellen,
  I've only been wearing hard lenses for a year.  I got mine at the
House of Optics in the PPG building.  There probably are cheaper
places, but they do a good job.  I think eye examinations are $20.  I
don't know what the lenses cost.  I have gas-permeable lenses which are
quite expensive.
