Here are all the responses (slightly editted) I received to my posting
for optometrist recommendations. Most (4 of 5) recommend Dr. Fred Smith
(located in SqHill).

Dr Fred Smith on Murray Ave reigns supreme in the field of optometry.

I recommend Dr. Fred Smith in SQ Hill... Talks
a bit too much but otherwise seems competent and
reasonably price (not that I have much of a basis
to understand price).

I have an opthalmalogist I can recommend (as opposed to an
optometrist.) Personal bias: I prefer the former to the latter, just
on the basis that the former has more medical training, can prescribe,
and my family has a slight history of eye trouble. Then again, I'm
marrying a physician, so it may just be bias.

That said, I use Christie & Scott, located on Penn Ave. just by
St. Francis hospital; they are in the medical offices on the first few
floors of the parking structure. The senior partner of
(Christie/Scott) has retired, and they've gotten a new physician,
who's been with the practice for perhaps two years now, perhaps less.
I saw this new physician in the past year, and was happy with the
results. Being new, he's a bit overcautious, which suits me just
fine. This office is not particularly cheap: I think it's O($60) for
a checkup.

My fiancee went to Eye & Ear, which is over by Presby and is part of
the UPMC network. She got a good price (I don't recall what it was)
because UPMC employees receive a 20% discount.

I like Dr. Smith in Sq Hill. He is pretty thourgh in
examination.
I have recommended several people who used to have problems
with contacts and they all seemed to have better experiences with
Dr. Smith's perscription.

His address/number is

  Smith, Dr. Frederick

This is a repeat of a recommendation I made to Bovik in 1989 and
a couple of times since then.

I have been taking my eyes to Bernard Mallinger for years
and remain quite satisfied. He takes the time to understand
my visual needs and works with me to resolve them.

He's on Craig St just past the first light north of Fifth.

If you see him, tell him I recommeded him.
