Steve Kaltman removed a tumor from my tongue a couple years ago. (He
was recommended by my dentist, Steven Miller). The surgery come out
fine, and he treated me like an intelligent human being throughout.

Our family has taken all of our wisdom teeth, root canals, etc. to Wm. Hall,
a.k.a. Hall Associates Ltd. Bill is a second-generation oral surgeon -- his
father, Dewitt Hall, was renowned in the field. In addition to his
considerable surgical skills, he is one of the finest men I have ever met.
He removed my wisdom teeth, which were badly impacted, and did a first-class
job.

He has two offices:
	Downtown	100 5th Avenue Building 281-4766
			   (near Horne's)
Mt. Lebanon	639 Washington Road 563-7707

You can also count on the reputation of anyone in practice with him.

Good luck,
Steve

Disclaimer: My father grew up with Bill Hall, and I grew up with his son
Jim, who has probably joined the practice.  I get nothing for promoting them;
just the satisfaction of seeing a true professional continue to do the work
at which he has excelled for many years.

I had a tricky impacted tooth out by Kaltman and it went just fine.
He spends a lot of time explaining the operation, showing you whats
what on a model skull and on the xrays. I grew up around hospitals
(where my family worked) and know something about procedures, he
was very carefull.

A former tartan employee had a problem where her gums didn't heal up
after the operation. Aperently kaltman had asked if she had any problems
with her blood cloting and she said no. If she had said that she never
had gotten stiches or had a bad cut it might of gone better. Anyway
after a couple of weeks of bleeding off and on, she got some blood tests
and got a cloting agent. She wasn't mad at him and would be willing
to go back evan though the operation was non optimal.

I had a wisdom tooth removed by Dr. Harold Zubrow. HQB has quite a few
references to him. I had an additional complication in that the tooth
was impacted. As far as I know, the surgery was a piece of cake; I didn't
feel a thing during or after the surgery.

I've never used an oral surgeon locally, but I know all thhree of the
men you mentioned in your post socially. I would choose Kaltman to do
surgery on me.

Jim,

Nancy recently had major jaw surgery done at Central Medical by Dr.
Stern (Norman?); there are several others in his practice. Her
orthodontist recommended him strongly as the best in town. I'm not sure if
they do simple stuff like wisdom teeth or not. My guess is that they'd be a
bit pricy if they do.

We went to Steve Kaltman for a second opinion. He seemed competent
and also very pleasant to deal with. I believe it was Lewis who told
us that Kaltman used to be in practice with Stern &co. I can tell you
that Kaltman charged $23 for a second opinion, but Stern charged $40
for the initial consultation. (I think that's two apples, but it may be
an apple and an orange.) Stern has better magazines, furniture, TV and
art in his waiting room. Kaltman has free parking at his Monroeville
office; I think he has another office in town.

My wife had hers removed by a Dr. Bass and was reasonably pleased.
This was about two years ago. Our personal dentist is Dr. Jules
Feldman who we think is great. Unfortunately he has offices downtown,
making a trip to the dentist just that more painful.

There's a guy named VandeVisse in Oakland, who seems pretty
good. He did a root canal on my wife...

I had my wisdom teeth removed last month by Associates in Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery. (In the Central Medical pavillion across from
the Civic Arean.) I was referred by Dr. Judith Davenport. They're part of
the HealthAmerica program (among others), if it matters. The procedure seemed
reasonable, except for a leaky hose on the air drill, which they discovered
when they were cutting my bottom tooth. I've went back five times after the
extraction for post-operative care, I needed packings in the (fully impacted)
lower teeth to help ease the pain of dry-socket. I don't know if this is
much better or worse than other places, I've only had my wisdom teeth
out once, so I don't really have a good basis for comparison. Good luck.
