Theresa:

Although I don't know of a good allergist LOCALLY, I do know of one to
STAY AWAY FROM -- Mayer A. Green and Associates (Downtown Pgh.)!! I went to
this guy when I first had my allergies diagnosed and stayed with him until 2
years ago when I had finally had it -- His prices are outrageous (something
like $50.00 just to walk in the door) and although at first glance his testing
procedures seem good (every year he will require blood tests, urinalysis,
chest xrays if you smoke, lung capacity tests if you are asthmatic), most are
unnecessary and will cost you a small fortune as well.

Although I was having doubts about my treatments (skin tests showed I was
allergic to dust, molds, tree pollens, animal danders; I received injections
every week at first then ended up getting my shots every 6 weeks and yet I
was feeling fine -- he never bothered to re-skin test me to see if my
allergies had changed), I didn't make my move to another allergist until
I found out at my last visit with him that initially I was diagnosed as
on the verge of having some chronic lung disease and not only was I never
told this, but he never bothered to retest me to see if there were any
problems during the 6 YEARS since the initial diagnosis!!! Along with
all of this his attitude toward patients is rather indifferent and you
can look forward to a 3 hour wait in the waiting room, another 1 hour wait
in the treatment room and 5 minutes time with him or one of his associates!!

I have since been going to a Dr. Helen Krause at the Passavant Professional
Building in the North Hills -- I have been very satisfied here. Skin testing
has shown that indeed my allergies have changed over the years (I was also
told that getting a shot every 6 weeks won't do any good anyway); the staff
is very considerate and will do everything they can to help you. Although
it takes me about an hour to get there, I consider it worthwhile when I
can get the proper care (plus once you are diagnosed and given antigens,
your local doctor can administer them and you will only need to go across
town about twice a year).

I hope this helps -- if you would like any more information please send
me mail (Sadlow@cmuc).

Sincerely,
Linda
