I'd like recommendations for a good chiropractor, preferably someone
experienced with athletes and/or dancers. If you have opinions about
chiropractors in general, I'd like to hear them.

Thanks,
Jeannette Wing

Contrary to what physicians will tell you, chiropractors can be very
helpful (provided that the injury is not disease related). Periodic
spinal adjustments can help prevent injury and a good chiropractor can
help an injury heal. Anyone who has spent any time in a gym knows this.
Lee Steinbach on Shady Ave. comes highly recommended.
Some states have laws regarding chiropractic practice. For example,
New Jersey forbids a chiropractor from working on extremities (arms
and legs) via restrictions on insurance and Blue Cross payments. I
don't know about PA, but if you have such an injury you should find
out. Some chiropractors who have been specially trained in extremities
will work on you anyway and call it a back injury for the sake of the
forms.
If you regard the injury as serious, you should have an X-ray. In NJ
chiropractors are licensed to do this. Again, I don't know about PA.

I had a very good experience with a young, black chiropractor whose office
is in East Liberty. His name is Cleveland Brown.

I originally went to him because of a "kink" in my back. He X-rayed to make
sure I didn't need to be referred to a surgeon, then worked the "kink" out
slowly over a period of several weeks. This man is NOT into "snap, crackle
and pop".

I have a chronic problem with one of my knees, and had seen several orthopedic
surgeons. Both said that I'd eventually have to be operated upon. Dr. Brown
noticed my knee problem while treating my back. He suggested treating me for
it, and did so for about a year. The treatment consisted of having my kneecap
pushed into a slightly new position, while I taught myself to walk differently
(feet forward instead of splayed -- this took the pressure off the injured part
of my knee).

No one had ever suggested that I could manage my knee by using it differently,
and I consider the treatment 100% successful. I still have cartilage problems
and arthritis in that knee, but I only notice it very rarely now.

I believe the cost of the first visit was around $60 (including x-ray).
Subsequent visits were $15.

Specific: We have a chiropractor we like a lot, Alan Berman on Murray
Ave. in the Squirrel Hill/Greenfield area. If he doesn't deal
with athletes, he could give you a recommendation. You can
tell him I sent you, if you like (we have mutual friends, and
	we're customers of his.)
General: Chiropractors are wonderful for spine and joint problems,
which regular doctors seem singularly unable to deal with. I
don't trust some of their bizarre theories, though. E.g.,
almost any other physical problem can be traced to a misplaced
vertebra. Alan is very low-key about the wierd stuff.

Try Jeff Cohen in the University Square Apartments, Fifth at Neville,
681-4747. He has for years had some of the Steelers as clients.

His methods are not the traditional "crack your back" type, but rather
to find the source of tension , relieve it and realign the body.
There's a name for this school of chiropracty, but it eludes me at this
time.

I've been a client for years and have been quite pleased with
the those treatments i've recieved.

I have lots of reservations about chiropractors in general and in particular
for athletes, dancers, etc. based on my own observations and experiences as
well as those of friends. I think that it's, at best, difficult to find a
chiropractor who's good as well as experienced with athletes. The same is
true for podiatrists. I would start with someone in sports medicine. You
might try an athletic trainer here at CMU first to get help or referrals
to other professionals. I would advise against letting anyone 'adjust your
spine' or prescribe orthotics until you've atempted to solve your problem
with less radical alternatives. For runners, for example, many problems
have simple solutions like stretching exercises, strengthening and balancing
programs, changing shoes, training methods, etc. The techniques and tools of
chiropractors and podiatrists can be just as invasive as those of surgeons
even though no cutting is involved. So here too I think it is wise to try
the alternate solutions first. If you want to discuss any of this further,
just let me know (WeH 3220, x3648). I think it's pretty important, especially
when the sport or activity you're involved in is important to you to keep
yourself healthy and happy.

Dirk

--------------------And finally,-------------

I got another recommendation for Jeffrey Cohen, at 4627 Fifth
(University Square Apts.), 681-4747. Maria Teresa del Real and Pablo
Savoye of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater go to him as do many other
dancers. Apparently he treats football players and other athletes too.
