Dear Dr. Bovik,

Here are the responses to my recent post about pediatric dentists.
Quite a few different dentists were recommended, although most votes
went to:

	Drs. Pechersky & Capelli
	Drs. Gottlieb & Jackson

I have a recent WWW page with a recommendation about Dr. Melnick. He
doesn't call himself a pediatric dentist, but I think he's probably
fine with kids. One of his hygenists appears to have many kid-oriented
materials in her office (her name might be Carrie).

Dear Roni,

... Dr. Jack Pechersky. ... has an office at 3471 5th Ave, ph.n.
683-4540. He is usually very busy, but he is definitely worth waiting
couple of days (if situation permits). We brought both our sons from
Russia with some dental problems (now 6 and 12), Dr. Jack has fixed
everything! He is known as the best pediatric dentist in Pittsburgh. I
am really happy with his service.

Regards,

Yury Smirnov

We use Thomas Blaze for our kids (currently 6 and 4) and have been
very happy with him. His office is in Oakland; I forget the address, but
I'm sure he's in the phone book :-)

We take our daughter (5 yrs old) to Dr. Gottlieb, who
has offices in Bloomfield and Monroeville. He was
featured in Mr. Roger's book about going to the
dentist, if you've seen that.

The hygienist takes time to show all the tools
to the kid and let them hold it or play with it
before she uses it. Dr. Gottlieb is also very
good with the kids. My daughter is not real good
with doctors, but doesn't mind going to the
dentist at all.

The phone # at their Monroeville office is 856-6660

Have you gotten a reccomendation for Dr. Gottlieb yet? He is great. He
is in the Mellon Pavillion in Bloomfield. He only does children and
was also the dentist in "mister Rogers goes to the dentist". Tons of
people reccomened him to me before we went. My daughter loves to brush
the teeth of the stuffed animals they have in the examination area.

o.s. they also give a discount to Health America members.

We take our son to Dr. Jack Perchersky (683-4540). Dr.
Jack and his group are wonderful. He is a pediatric dentist
only. Dr. Jack is located in the Kaufmann Building on 5th
avenue (3471 5th Avenue) on the 11th floor just down the
hall from our pediatrican, Dr. Jerome Wolfson (wonderful
pediatric group by the way..our teenage girl thinks the
world of Dr. Jane Brecht, her pediatrician).

Our son is 5 by the way and has been seeing Dr. Jack since
he was two (when he fell down the steps and knocked out a tooth).
That's my boy!

We've been pleased with:

Marcus A. Gottlieb, D.D.S.*
Thomas W. Jackson, D.M.D.

Pediatic and Adolescent Dentists
They also have an office in Monroeville.

They are very well set up for children and the hygienists are
especially great with the littlest ones, explaining what they are
going to do before they actually do it, being very positive and
encouraging, etc. For example, before trying to clean and scale their
teeth they say they are going to "count their teeth" by using rubbing
their teeth with a pick. Then they rub their children fingernails
with the pick so they have an idea of what it will feel like.

The dentists seem to be quite competent, although I'm never sure how
one evaluates a dentist's knowledge and quality. But they do use the
new plastic fillings instead of amalgams and sealants for permanent
teeth.

I'd like to recommend Dr. Jack Pechersky and Dr. Christie Cappelli,
located at 3471 Fifth Ave. (The Kaufman Bldg next to Montefiore Hospital.)
Phone: 683-4540

Although my daughter hates going to the dentist (has been seeing Dr. Jack
since she was 3 because of some oddly formed teeth)--every time she sees
Doctor Jack, she gives him a big smile, and marches right into the dentist's
chair. Parents are encouraged to stay in the waiting room.

On occasion my daughter has been examined by Dr. Christie and seems to like
her too.

The practice is entirely pediatric, and we've never had any trouble with
the hygenists--I should think they would know what they were getting into
when the went to work there!

Good luck,
Grace Downey

Roni,

We recommend our pediatric dentist(s) very highly. They are Jack
Pechersky and Kristy Cupelli, and they are in practice together.
Their hygienists and other support people are also very good. They
are in the Kaufmann building in Oakland. Pechersky was recommended to
us by our pediatrician.

We have a four-year-old daughter who has been to "Dr. Jack" twice and
to "Dr. Kristy" once; all of the experiences have been great. Our
daughter is a bit skittish around new people and places, so going to
the dentist might have been a very traumatic thing. The dentists are
very sensitive to this, and they have things set up very well to
acclimate kids to the teeth cleaning/check-up process.

Here's a example experience: First, they bring the child into a room
with 3 chairs where other young kids (maybe around 4-5) and older kids
(up to teenagers) are in various stages of teeth cleaning and
check-ups. They bring the child in to sit down and watch what's going
on. They talk to the waiting child while they're preparing and
working on the other kids, building up confidence. They usually want
the parents to wait in the waiting room after the child has settled
into watching the other kids. They say they find that kids can deal
with things better when the parents are in the other room. They have
sunglasses for kids to wear under the light, and other diversions
like a new toothbrush, or a timer to hold while having a fluoride
treatment. And, of course, there are stickers at the end.

So I would say that they really understand kids and try to do
everything they can to make the experience positive. Their process is
set up that way, and I find that the dentists themselves and the
hygienists and other people are very good with kids.

Dr. Kristy also was kind enough to see us on very short notice when
our 1-year-old fell and hit her front teeth on something. There was
quite a bit of blood and her tooth was pushed back up into her gums.
Dr. Kristy saw us almost immediately after calling (it was just after
regular business hours). Turns out the damage was not bad and she
said the tooth would come back down again (which it did). Anyway, she
went out of her way to help us out.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions, and feel
free to forward this to Bovik.

Cliff

Hi,

My son Rowan is in preschool with the daughter of a pediatric dentist,
Harvey Block, who has his office in the Factory (where lots of other
kid-oriented stuff is). He had the class over to talk about brushing
teeth. He seems very pleasant and tuned in to kids, but I haven't
used his services (or any other p.d., that reminds me...).

Roni,

My son has had very good experiences with the dentists Gottlieb and Jackson
who are in the West Penn office bldg on Liberty Avenue.

My son prefer's the younger Dr. Jackson.
Dr. Gottlieb is the dentist about whom Mr. Rodger's book is written.
They are very kid oriented.....
a videogame based on teeth in the waiting room.
shared treatment rooms so no one feels isolated...
lots of incentive....for flossing, brushing, etc.

Dr. Jackson and my son even had a short water battle with the spray
rinse nozzle.

Phillip even tolerated a filling fairly well.
Their phone number is 682-7900.
Their address is Bloomfield, 4815 Liberty Avenue.

Good luck....
Mary Scott
