Steve, I'm sorry but not surprised to hear you've had marginal health care,
and very happy that I have the opportunity to try to improve that situation.

For internal medicine (a good first approximation to a GP unless you break
bones or have other more esoteric special problems), go see Philip Levine in
the Kaufmann building next to Presby hospital in Oakland. I have never come
close to being so happy with the professionalism, competence, courtesy
(e.g., he will treat you like an intelligent human being, not like a coal
miner or a piece of meat) and all around performance of a physician. His
colleagues consider him a real physicians' physician. He isn't any more
expensive than typical internists or Pittsburgh MD's in general. Tell him
you came because I told you that you'd be in the best hands possible.

The Levine of dentistry (or vice versa) is Robert Schoewe ("Shave'-ee").
All of the above accolades apply, but: he is in Allison Park (Rt. 8), so not
as convenient; and he is rather more expensive than typical dentists. Both
of those are prices worth paying when you want or need the best dental care
possible. His initial exam/consultation is likely to cost you $50; full
x-rays are $35. His hygenist spends an HOUR cleaning your teeth ($30), not
half as most others do. He does not do silver fillings because they have to
be replaced every decade or so, and he is into permanant restoration (that
means gold inlays--a mere $475, not to mention the 6-8 weekly visits, per
tooth). He has his own gold and porcelain labs with full time tech's on
site. You may want to have him do everything but fillings; he has a partner
who will then do silver fillings.

I hope I have been helpful--let me know your thoughts and experiences.

Doug
