First, my original post: 14-Jul-92 11:13 Jennifer Kay Physician Recommendations Wanted From: Jennifer Kay My fiance is sick, and if it persists another couple of days I'm going to drag him to a doctor. Trouble is, he doesn't have a doctor, and even if he gets better without one this time he isn't likely to visit one while he's healthy to have an initial appointment. Bovik's last update was 3 years ago, so I guess it's time for another go. I'm looking for doctors in the Squirrel Hill area (although Shadyside/Oakland/etc would be OK too if there's somewhere to park nearby), especially ones who can see you with relatively short notice, and don't mind seeing you for the first time when you're sick. I'll compile the responses I get and send them to Bovik. -- Jennie -------------------------------- And now the responses, in the order I received them: Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1992 11:32-EDT From: Mark.Stehlik@G.GP.CS.CMU.EDU To: Jennifer Kay Subject: Re: Physician Recommendations Wanted Jennie, Our family physician is Dr. Robert Cohen. He was affiliated with Shadyside hospital, but his practice is now in Forest Hills (on Ardmore Blvd., about 10 minutes from Squill). He's an excellent physician and I'd recommend him highly. His address is 2020 Ardmore Blvd Suite 115 and his phone number is 271-1780. (Well, my wife mostly -- being pretty healthy and not in an HMO until this year, I've seen him once, but I intend to go in for my 30-year check-up real soon.) They are located in the new office building on Center Ave, next to Jimmy Tsang's (Shadyside or E.Liberty?) which often has street parking available, in addition to a lot (garage?). Can't say how quickly he'll see you (whether sick or not), but my wife likes him alot. He is Keystone Health Plan West participating, if it makes a difference (don't know about other HMO's). Very truly yours, Tom. -- Thomas F. Morton & Knupp (near the large Greenfield Giant Eagle). We no longer use them because we switched insurance carriers. We've used Dr. Bernacki and on Greenfield Ave. for a couple of years, and think they are very good also. If it matters to your fiance, Dr. Bernacki is the only man among the four. (I know some men who are more comfortable having the option of going to a man for some things.) Although I think any doctor would prefer to have a healthy baseline to compare with, none of these will complain if you go in sick the first time (at least they didn't with us). --david -------------------------------------------------------- To: Jennifer Kay cc:sford@GEYSER.MAPS.CS.CMU.EDU Subject: Re: Physician Recommendations Wanted Date: Tue, 14 Jul 92 12:57:24 EDT From: sford@GEYSER.MAPS.CS.CMU.EDU Sender: sford@GEYSER.MAPS.CS.CMU.EDU I recommend Dr. Tim Campbell. He is my Internalist next to Mercy Hospital at 1350 Locust St. Parking is available. I am confident that he keeps time slots for urgent visits so your finance should be able to get in immediately. He is a terrific physician with great doctor-patient interaction and he is very thorough. He is young (mid-30's) and I have heard he makes emergency housecalls .-------------------------------------------------------- To: jennie+@IUS5.IUS.CS.CMU.EDU Subject: Re: Physician Recommendations Wanted Cc: Bcc: Date: Tue, 14 Jul 92 13:13:46 EDT From: hsmoliar@DB1.SPEECH.CS.CMU.EDU Sender: hsmoliar@DB1.SPEECH.CS.CMU.EDU In article <1992Jul14.150920.174491@cs.cmu.edu> you write: >My fiance is sick, and if it persists another couple of days I'm going >to drag him to a doctor. His is a PhD/MD, I believe, treats you as an intelligent human being, and is British, by the way. He is a BC/BS provider, I believe. At least he has never charge me more than what BC/BS is willing to pay. His office is above West coast Video on Murry. Knupp, 4381 Murray Ave, 521-2857. I haven't been to her for a while since I haven't needed anything beyond what student health can do, but I found her to be a really humane family practice style doctor who treats you with respect. Her office is at the Greenfield end of Murray Avenue. Good luck! -------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1992 10:45:23 -0400 (EDT) From: "Stephen P. Hoover" To: jennie+@ius5.ius.cs.cmu.edu (Jennifer Kay) Subject: Re: Physician Recommendations Wanted Cc: Jennie, If you want to get him to see a doctor and are worried about the long lead time associated with appointments, you may want to try one of the Urgi-Care centers. These are run by the Forbes regional health care system. They are staffed by doctors are are designed to remove the load from emergency rooms by taking care of situations that are urgent but not emergencies. I don't have a GP here in Pittsburgh but my wife and I have seen them for bad cases of the flu, sprained ankles, rashes etc... We have found the level of care to be very good, the doctors are competent and friendly, and best of all you don't need an appointment!! We've never waited more than 25 minutes to see a doctor even though we don't have an appointment (of course your mileage may vary :) Unfortunately they closed the one in Squirrel Hill about 2 years ago, we've gone to the one in Penn Hills since then. But look in the phone book there is one closer off of Route 30. Good luck, Steve Hoover
