My experiences with student health have been mostly very positive but I
think that might be influenced by the fact that they know me on a first
name basis (I go in weekly for allergy shots) and that I sort of know
how to get what I want.  The main problem I've found is that it can be
difficult to get in to see a doctor --- they usually try to get you to
see a nurse first.

I've found the service to be convenient (allergy shots, throat cultures,
etc.)  and they sometimes go a bit out of their way for me.  For
example, one day I stopped for my shot and I asked about getting a
tetanus shot.  (I'm doing a lot of repair work in an old house and keep
getting cut.)  They were quite busy that day but rather than have me
make an appointment, the nurse just told me to sit in the receptionist
area, she got the forms and serum, and gave me the shot there.  No fuss,
no hassles.

The only problem I've had with them is the delay -- you absolutely
can't get a same-day appointment.

I've had fine experiences with student health.  I've also not had any
terrifically complicated illnesses.  They were unable to help me with
an ingrown toenail once.  They've correctly diagnosed and treated
numerous sinus infections with different antibiotics.  They also
diagnosed and treated an allergy I have with yet another drug.

They are not sophisticated and I wouldn't go to them for anything I
thought was a complex problem, but they are dirt cheap: free so far,
in fact.  I definitely think I get more than what I pay for.

They are also fairly convenient and a cheap place to fill
perscriptions for things they stock (and have always given me free
samples of a more expensive item they don't normally stock).

Hi Jennie,

Till recently I did not have a car, so I found the student health center
to be the only convinient place to go. Now that I think of it, I too am
rather dissatisfied with them. Here's why:

1. They are unable to diagnose anything beyond the very ordinary. 
	Eg, I went to them with a swelling in the veins in 
my arm twice due to an having taken IV(when I got sick at home), and although 
I got lucky the first time and had it diagnosed (or at least treated) 
effectively, the second time despite this history, another physician could not 
figure out what was wrong. Finally I got myself treated by consulting a doctor 
over the phone, and was fine in two days after 2 weeks of pain. 
Another example is eye irritation...but I cannot complain much about the fact 
that they referred me to an ophthalmologist.

2. Annual gynec. checkup. They really did a bad job, and I too am now looking
for some other gynecologist. So if you get any responses, do let me know!

They told me that they'd be glad to take my blood pressure
once in a while, and that I was welcome to use the scale,
but that I had to realize that I was "outside the age
window of their professional expertise."  The doctor in
question told me that she was a pediatrician and that
pediatricians are trained to treat people up to the age
of 30.

I thin I sent this to Bovik back when it happened, in '85, but the
student health service nearly killed my ex-wife and me.  The doctor
there at the time (whom we called the angel of death) prescribed an
overdose of malaria preventative for our trip to Haiti.

We heard from an undergrad we knew of several serious misdiagnoses
that landed students in the hospital.

Considering that it's free, I don't think it's too bad.  They're fine
for the small day-to-day things that students need, but if you have a
real problem they'll send you somewhere else.  I guess the only
complaint I have is that it's usually pretty crowded and it's not very
efficient--if you're sick, you set up an appointment and a nurse will
see you, tell you you're sick, and then tell you to set up an
appointment with a doctor.
