I rented an apartment from E&J a year ago, and I thought they were terrible. Things were always going wrong and in a state of disrepair, and if you dared to call and complain, they basically just told you to stop whining. For example, I made the mistake of not checking out the fridge, only to discover after I moved in that it had no shelves! Only after calling Lee Favish almost every day for a couple of months, and getting the runaround between her and her mother and sister, did I finally get something done. The fridge was so old that it didn't even have parts available any more. The toilet seat had been painted over and was flaking and chipping, and they replaced that only begrudgingly, and with the most bizarrely colored seat you can imagine. All I can say is, if you rent from them, check everything out very thoroughly, and pray that nothing ever goes wrong. _________________________________________________________________________ Date: Tue, 2 Jul 91 12:33:51 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: E&J, Nalco E&J sucks. They do not maintain their properties and can not be reached for maintenance requests. So if your bathroom has problems, that's too bad. They also do not care about security at 5830 Fifth Ave. The doors to the buildings are often wide opened. There was a break in recently and a stabbing last winter. Also, you can get parking tickets for parking in your own lot under E&J at 5830 Fifth. Although there are not clear parking spaces, you can be towed away if you don't obey them.?.?! _________________________________________________________________________ Date: Tue, 2 Jul 91 20:25:17 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: Seek Landlord Comments Hi, I noticed E&J management on your list. Avoid them. In my dealings with them I found them very dishonest. When I was looking at one of their apartments, they sent my roommate and I a copy of the lease to sign. We noticed some vague sections of the least, and so we wrote a letter asking them to clarify these sections. On each occation we wrote what we thought was the most reasonable interpretation of each section, and what wasn't. They called, and told us that our interpretations were, in fact, the correct ones. We signed the lease and moved in. Actually, we moved into a different apartment 'cause they had rented out the one we reserved. The new apartment was nice, but was on the ground floor, and thus cheaper. They sent us a revised lease. The new lease already had our signatures on it! Not only that, the vague sections were rewritten to reflect the *un*reasonable interpretations. Apparently is was the old 'white-out and photocopier' trick. We didn't discover this until months later. It was our first apartment, so we were kinda clueless. Also, once the radiator pipe broke and flooded the kitchen. They came in, knocked a hole in the floor, fixed the pipe... then left the hole there for a month! _________________________________________________________________________ Date: Sat, 6 Jul 91 21:00:24 -0400 (EDT) Subject: E@J I would like to add a few comments regarding E@J management. I currently rent a two bedroom apartment on 5600 5th Avenue. I rented the apartment from Marhoefer Realty in 1988 and had no problems at all for the first year (I received the apartment in good condition). Unfortunately they sold the building to E@J in 1989 and my experience with them is not a positive one. They are not responsive at all and actually they haven't fixed anything. I pay $40 for a parking space while the driveway is in such a terrible condition that I had to repair the car twice during the last year. They promised initially to repair the driveway before April. In May they promissed to do it during the first week of July. Still it is not repaired!! The blind in one of the bedrooms is broken and after several calls and reassurances that it is going to be replaced within "the week" the blind is still broken after 3 whole months. Plaster is coming out of the ceiling (we are on the last floor with a flat roof on top) and when we asked at least for an inspection the answer was yes but nobody ever appeared. I can go on with the list but I suppose that you get the picture. Good luck with your search.
