I've been having a problem with water in my basement lately; all evidence
pointed to a clog in the sewer pipe leading from the basement to the main
outbound pipe. (I had problems when doing laundry but not when taking
showers.) I called M. Stahl Plumbing to come take a look. They showed up
late without notice, spent about an hour and a half with a snake, and told
me that the area I'd identified as the likely culprit was clear but that
when they ran a snake to the outside they got dirt. I obviously had a
collapsed sewer pipe; it could only be fixed by digging up my side yard
until they found the bad section and replacing it. Expected cost: $3500.
Cost of the visit: $190.

As an aside, the problem got worse after Stahl had been there; I've since
been getting water in the basement (up through the drain in the floor) on a
regular basis, and this weekend I started to get, ahem, more than water.
Smelled pretty disgusting.

Not that I wouldn't have gotten a second (and third) opinion anyway, but
something about their manner set off a red flag. This morning Tom Stock
(Fred's brother) came out with a snake and cleared the sewer (no collapsed
pipe; just some small tree roots). The basement drain is working just fine
now. Tom hosed out the basement, applied bleach, and generally cleaned up
the mess that had been made. He was there about 45 minutes. Cost: $85.

I'll be using Tom for any future plumbing problems, and I won't touch Stahl
again. Tom's number is 856-1077.

Monica
