Subject: Glass Block recommendation
Message-Id: <681844050/cl@G.GP.CS.CMU.EDU>

I would like to highly recommend Suburban Glass Block. We just had them
install 11 (eleven!) glass block windows in our basement and they did an
excellent job in a tough situation: the windows were of a non-standard size,
some had a gas main or electric wires going through the frames and the
foundation support was quite old. They also had to partially block two well
windows. Their price was very competitive and they stuck by their bid. It
is a father-son business (Ross and Carl Campbell) and they have a very
flexible schedule and work quite hard. Their phone number is 441-0178.

I would also like to warn against (although not outright disrecommend)
somebody named Bob Zimmer, who is referenced by the Browns Hill Sand & Glass
Block Co. He seems competent and gave me a slightly lower bid than
Suburban, but although he had specifically told me that his bid included the
removal of all the frames, he told me during a later visit - after I had
tentatively awarded him the job - that some frames were o.k. and that
removing them was going to cost an extra couple hundred dollars. Basically
the good old "bait and switch" technique. He subsequently lowered that
figure and when I decided to cancel the agreement, called me later to offer
to do it for the original price. I had lost confidence in him and decided
to go with Suburban.
