I got a few responses to my bb post asking about renting a truck to
move my stuff -- thought you might be interested.

I rented a U-Haul truck one way from Philly to Pgh in 1985. I think
it came out to about $300 or so. I would recommend you go with Ryder
although it might be more expensive. U-Haul was the cheapest and it showed.
No a/c, standard transmission and this stupid governor which prevented
me from going faster than 55mph. On the hilly section of the turnpike, the
truck literally crawled at 40mph. U-Haul has undergone a changes so
the situation might be different now.

When I was moving back from Boston 2 years ago (and when I moved out there
2 years before that) I went with Hertz/Penske to rent a truck. They had far
and away the best price (some base price + some cents per mile above the
free miles they give you + your own gas). One thing to look into is the
dropoff point. If you drop the truck off at their station on Negley (a
Texaco) it costs a lot more than if you drop it off at say Monroeville, and
have someone drive out with you to bring you back when you return it. Ask
about this when you rent the truck, because you have to choose a dropoff
point when you pick the truck up.

They have certain regions of the country that have too many trucks (it cost
a lot to take a truck to these areas, since they have to pay to redistribute
them) and some that don't have enough (cheap to rent a truck to, since they
need to get trucks into those areas). I couldn't tell you if $250 was
good or not, just compare it to what other prices you get. I was pretty
surprised that Hertz (a big name brand) was cheaper than many of the others.

Hope this helps.

Happy traveling.

I have just (literally; walked into CMU, into my office, sat down and
read bags) dropped off a Ryder truck at the Exxon station down Forbes
from CMU. For their smallest van (which still schlepped all of my
furniture around in one trip) it's something like $39 per day plus
insurance plus 39c per mile. I guess the mileage is the expensive bit,
and I have no idea of the milage from Philly to Pgh, but they
definitely do one-way rentals (this truck had Texas plates...). Phone
number of the garage is 687-1777. Hope this helps.

Hi Jennie!

We rented a U-Haul for $19.95 for the day. It was considered a
"local" rental. I'm not sure if that really means "we won't take
it more than n miles away" or if that simply means that "we will
return the truck to them rather than to a different U-Haul franchise."

If your quotes are for one-way rentals, then you are probably going
to have to pay much more because of the "drop off fee" which is the
"cost" to the franchise to return the truck to where you picked it
up. I suspect that if you get quotes for a round trip, it might be
lower -- though, your cost for gas would increase.

You might also consider hiring some undergrads with a van. They might
like the road-trip and some extra money. I know someone who hired some
ex-undergrads for three local loads (with lots of manual labor) for $50.

I don't know if $250.00 is resonable or not, but it's what you are
going to pay, regardless of company. Before you rent one, though,
here's some experienced advice:

>long and dreary story about truck full of furniture that breaks down
often on NJ and Penna. turnpikes deleted.

Stay away from Hertz/Penske!!!!

You will be much happier that way, and so will your belongings.

the ^&$*&# headlights even quit on their (*&%^@#&^ truck at night!

and they charged me the full price anyway.
