From: Thomas.Mathies@G.GP.CS.CMU.EDU

I purchased an Oriental style (9x12) rug at an estate auction
earlier this month and I'd like to have it cleaned. I got
three prices (incl. pick up and delivery):
	Coit $98.58
	Kazanjiran 60.00
North Side Carpet Cleaning Co. 43.20	($34.56 for cash and carry)

Any suggestions before I go to NSCCC?

Results will be Boviked.

If it's really an Oriental, stick with somebody who knows Orientals. Call
Shehady's Oriental carpets; he's a reputable man.

Tom,

You might try O'Bannon in Squirrel Hill. I'd be interested to hear how
they compare.

Please tell more about "estate auctions" in general. These sound like
good places to pick up furnishings. But I don't know anything about
them.

Thanks,
Harry

If that were my carpet, I would be VERY leary of a cleaning company that
quoted half of the highest quote (you get what you pay for and all that).
If you really care about the carpet, perhaps you should call a couple of
oriental rug dealers in the area (such as O'Bannon or Weiss in Sq. Hill) and
see if they recommend (or recommend against) certain cleaners. It would
also help if you know what the rug is made of (silk, wool, etc.) and what is
the country of its origin since different dyes are involved. You could end
up with a totally faded out rug.

There's a famous book, "Oriental Rugs" (wow, what an original title)
by Colonel something or other. I had it on the tip of my tongue, and now
its gone. Damn. Anyway, assuming you could hit a library card catalog
but CMU doesnt have it. Anyway, he's the God of Oriental Rugs,
and goes to great lengths to tell you what questions you should
ask a rug cleaner, and what soap you should insist on, and which
other rug books have been written by ignorant hosebags, and lots
of great flames in general on the rug trade. I highly recommend it,
I wish I could remember the guy's name (its been 5 years).

I guess this wasnt really much help, was it.

From: Thomas.Mathies@G.GP.CS.CMU.EDU

About a month ago I asked for advice on having a (not handmade)
Oriental design rug cleaned at North Side Carpet Cleaning Company.
I was advised to check with a real Oriental carpet place, so I
called O'Bannon's in Squirrel Hill. They suggested NSCCC. After
picking up a pad at Roth in Monroeville ($50 for 9' x 12'), I've
gotten the rug unrolled and it looks fine. Total price was
about $49 which included a repair of the fringe.

More details will be Boviked.
