The following information is rather old, but perhaps it will help.

Fitz,

As I recall, the place was called something like "Chemical Supply Company"
or something like that - not really obvious. We can look at our receipt at
home and send you the name.

The rates were something like $25 for one day (they deliver it around 8 or 9
one morning and pick it up the next morning), or $35 for the weekend
(deliver Friday morning, pick up Monday morning). Quarts of cleaning fluid
were $4 or so, and we used 2, I think (they will send over more if you want
and then give you credit for any that you don't open). Quarts of
spot-cleaner were about the same, and we used 1, but could easily have used
more (this stuff is good not only for spots, but for heavily travelled
areas).

Basically, what you get is a big wet/dry vacuum with a water-supply tank
attached to it. You fill the water tank with 5 gallons or so of water, dump
in 1/4 cup of cleaner (amounts are probably wrong here), plug in the cord,
connect up the hose to the vacuum and to the sprayer, and turn it on. Water
and cleaner squirts out five jets, and is (almost) immediately sucked up by
the vacuum. One tank of stuff does about one room.

It seemed like a reasonable deal to us. The rugs didn't get perfectly
clean, and maybe a professional cleaner could have done better, but they did
get somewhat cleaner. More spot remover would have helped.

                        - bob

The place is listed in the phone book as 'West Penn Chemical Supply Co'
with the phone number 885-7070. Receipt shows the same prices as in
my last mail, plus tax.

We rented a steam cleaner from our local Giant Eagle and had mixed results.
We got our carpets clean, but the first machine we rented had a missing
part, no one at the store understood anything about the machines, and the
second machine gave up the ghost after doing nearly the whole job
moderately well. We decided we were done. I won't do it this way again.
Maybe one of those "we rent everything" places would be more likely to
have reliable machines. Good luck.

You may wish to give Jim Hadad, owner of
Hadad's Cleaning Serive a call at 823-4651
They do carpeting, and they also
steam clean upholstered furniture.
It is a small business, and he is trying
to build a good reputation, so I'm sure
they will do a good job for you.

Please let him know that Mrs. Robert Downey
sent you, and that you work at CMU.
