I will just recently visiting a friend in boston who had a whole-house
fan.  The weather was not extremely oppressive (it was pretty cool out
by midnight, actually), but one thing that was amazing despite the
fact that it wasn't a really bad day is that the fan cooled the house donw
in about 5-10 SECONDS.  Not minutes.

If the outside air was very warm and humid, it is not clear how good
such a thing would be.  It's main advantage is that virtually instaneously
the temperature inside the house and the temperature outside the house
become equal.
