Many of the alternate long-distance companies are considerably less
expensive than AT&T although AT&T claims that they offer more customer
service to their customers. MCI has a lot of really neat stuff if
you're into things like electronic information systems (though CMU
seems to have plenty of that), but you don't need to subscribe to their
phone service to get that. As far as security goes, MCI and SPRINT are
probably your best bets. I don't know too much about ITT, but avoid
USTel if you don't want to hassle with them about calls you didn't
really make (I understand they're very good about those things, but
it's a needless hassle nonetheless). I've got AT&T right now, but I'm
most probably going to switch to MCI in the fall. Enjoy,
							- Jeff.

I used Sprint for awhile, and the quality was low enough that I
consider AT&T to be worth the price.

You probably don't want to choose Sprint. They are cheaper for calls
across the country, but I have on numerous occasions resorted to AT&T
because all of Sprint's lines were busy.

Steve,
My parents consulted a couple of independent studies before signing up
for a service. They picked SBS Skyline, though I don't know if it's
available in this area. They have had it for a year or so with no
complaints as far as I can tell.
Also, a housemate of mine has USTelephone (?) and has had trouble
getting open lines often. --Hans
