Dear Bovik,

Here are a few responses I received from the following query:

I need to find someone to do some structural repair and finish work on
my porch. The work includes replacing wooden columns and decking,
installing a wooden rail, and possibly some joist work.

RECOMMENDATION:
Carson and Erlandson remodeling. We've had them do
quite a bit of work for us (installing our new kitchen,
plaster repairs around the house, and building our deck).
They do excellent work and are very reasonable and reliable.
(Their # is 824-7963)

DISRECOMMENDATION:
Paul Schmidt built our neighbor's deck. It seems great
and he was about $400 cheaper than any other estimate we got
(including Carson & Erlandson's). We decided to go with him
but he never got us the plans that we needed to get the building
permit. We spent two very frustrating months trying to arrange
a meeting. He'd say he'd stop by to drop the plans off and
never show up. Finally, we gave up, called C&E and had them
do it. I guess you get what you pay for.

PS. please remember to forward all your replies to Dr. Bovik.

Garth --

I've been meaning to send an updated recommendation for John McElravy
to the good Dr. Bovik, but haven't gotten around to it. He works as
both a carpenter and/or a general contractor. He was recommmended to
me by some other members of the department, and in Bovik. I highly
recommend him. He helped us renovate our kitchen last summer ('95)
and he's putting in a new ceiling for us at the moment.

Our kitchen had some structural problems with the floor. The other
contractors that I brought in to look at it suggested ripping the
whole (oak) floor and the joists out and replacing them, to the tune
of about $2k. He looked at the problem for about five minutes,
figured out where the real cause of the problem was, suggested that we
add a single post and a few 2x4's. I did it, it was about a $75
repair, and the floor is as solid as can be (and still covered with
the original oak). He also did a good job on the rest of the project
(drywall, plumbing and electrical). He's not cheap, but he's not
particularly expensive either.

His number is 466-3807.

I'm surprised Bovik wasn't helpful.

Anyway, I really recommend Jon McElravy (his number is in Bovik).
Got him off the bboards & have recommended him to lots of people
who've had good experiences. He was the cheapest by far & did
a good job.
