Dr Bovik,

I noticed that you only had information about futon purchasing so I asked the
rest of the community for some help. Here is what I found out.

I ended up getting a queen mattress/boxspring set from PGH mattress company on
the south side. I am very pleased with the set so far. My only complaint is
that the mattress is thicker than standard queen beds so my old sheets tended
to come off at the corners. I solved the problem by getting a mattress cover
with extra-deep pockets.

Carlisle Mattress Company is a factory in Lawrenceville (the
neighborhood north of Bloomfield). They make great mattresses with
something like a 10 or 15 year guarantee. They also make futons and
frames but I can't comment on the quality.

Hi Scott,

I bought a mattress and box spring outfit from Pittsburgh Mattress
about 3 years ago. I had previously owned a Sealy Posterpedic so I was
a very tough customer. I have to say that I am reasonably happy with
it. I;m pretty sure that I bought top of the line or close to it
for less than any department store. It is a local business and,
according to them, you do not experience the mark-up as you do when
you buy from a department store chain.

Subject: Re: Buying mattresses?

We have a Stearns & Foster queen set purchased at Hornes, and a queen set
purchased at Pgh Mattress. The Stearns & Foster is the highest quality for
the highest price (~$660), but I mainly got it because it had a split box
spring, which was necessary to get it upstairs. Comes with a 20-30 year
guarantee and I've had it five years. The Pgh mattress uses a closed cell
foam block for the mattress inards. This is also high quality, high priced
(my wife claims she paid ~$1000, but it was before we were married), long
guarantee, and provides excellent firm support for bad backs. Their regular
mattresses are equivalent to name brands, but at lower prices.

When I was a student and could not afford the above prices (but like the
salesman says, you do spend a third of your life on a bed), I tried the
place across from Pgh Mattress in the building which used to have the
Stroh's clock, and now has somebody else's clock. They sold cheapo foam
rubber mattresses. I used one for several years, but it fell apart and I
threw it out during one move. If I were you, I'd invest in the best
mattress I could afford, rather than trying to save money.

I just came from the Sears Outlet Center on 51st St. just north of
Butler St. They just brought in a load of mismatched sets. Box
springs are $80, queen mattresses are $130, I don't remember the rest.

I've also looked at several discount places in Monroeville: Sleep Well
and Van Winkle's. They have pretty good prices on mid to high-quality
sets, but probably not as good as the mismatched sets at Sears.

We have a futon frame (!) made by P.M.Co., and it's great. I wouldn't
hesitate to buy anything else from them.

My wife and I just recently purchased a queen size mattress and box spring
from the American Buyer's Guild (look in the yellow pages). The price
they quoted to us over the phone was ~$50 less than the lowest discount
price we could find anywhere. They have no real showroom, and save costs
this way. What they'll tell you to do is to shop around elsewhere, find
a mattress you like, then call them for a quote.

We've been very satisfied with their service.

I have a pgh mattress co mattress and have been happy with it.
It is a full size, firm mattress. With the box spring and
delivery, etc. it cost only $279 three years ago. It seems
to be very well made.

Scott--

Well, this may be a bit late---I was out of town last week.

Back in the spring, after much shopping around, we bought a bed
from the Pgh Mattress Company, and are very happy with it. We came
to the conclusion that you really do save money there by avoiding the
department store overhead.

They were having a big sale when we bought it---that may have helped.
I think this sale might be annual affair, though.

One problem with Pgh Mattress Co: they're the only ones who will provide
service under their warranty, if you ever need it. THis means that if you
buy a bed with a fifteen year warranty and move away in two years, you're
stuck.

Hidden costs when bed-shopping: how much for the frame (or will they
throw it in for free)? How much for delivery and set-up? (During the sale
at Pgh Mattress, both frame and delivery were free.) Will they dispose of the
old mattress for you?

--Sean
