Subject: Do not use MATTRESS WORLD!!!
Date: Mon, 23 May 94 10:52:27 EDT
From: Barbara White <bjw@SEI.CMU.EDU>

We decided to order a queen-sized mattress through Mattress
World, McNight Road, North Hills. They're across from Ross
Park Mall, next to Value City.

Their prices were higher than other places (like American
Buyers Guild), but they were willing to match the prices of
their competitors. Since demo'd tried the mattresses in
Mattress World's showroom (we spent time with their
salesman), we decided to go with them, providing that they
matched the price of the other guys. They agreed.

We ordered the mattress two weeks ago. When they made the
first delivery, we noticed that the dust cover on the box
spring was not attached to the frame (it was just kind of
hanging off), and the mattress itself had a black stain that
cut into the fabric on the corner and the top of the mattress
itself had a fist-sized yellow stain. They'd also given us a
frame that didn't have a center support, although the frame
from the competition did offer the center support at the same
price.

Anyway, I had to argue with the manager to get him to bring
new mattress/box spring/frame. He wanted to have his
assistant inspect the mattress and make repairs on site
(attaching the dust cover and cleaning up the stains). I
wasn't satisfied with that course of action since we paid
$600 for the set and I wanted a new set (obviously, this was
faulty or was the demo model). Plus, his assistant would
have been unable to come out until the following week to make
the inspection and that would have been another week, during
which time, we would have had to continue sleeping on the
floor.

So, after some arguing, I got the manager, whose name was
"J.D." to consent to giving us a completely different set.
They arranged for delivery four days later, a Saturday. When
they delivered the new set, it was wrong. They gave us the
completely wrong style.

On Saturday, the manager told us that he'd contact us on
Tuesday but I phoned them this morning to discuss this. I
wanted to tell them that unless they got another shipment to
us THIS week, we would cancel the order and place one
elsewhere.

To make a long story short, the manager hung up on me while I
was talking with him this morning. When I told him that I
was planning on cancelling the order if he couldn't satisfy
us this week, he got really upset with me and told me that I
had no right even returning the first set because the stains
were small and not noticeable since you put sheets over them
anyway! Then, he told me that he didn't want me taking the
attitude I was taking, told me he'd phone me back some other
time, and hung up while I was replying to him.

I'm now trying to resolve this with the owner. But I would
say that you should avoid using Mattress World at all costs,
unless you deal with the owner directly. Her name is
Jeannette but I don't think she handles sales work directly.

I want to also mention that J.D. told me that it was okay for
us to use the mattresses until they could bring us out new
ones...which would have meant that had we done this, we'd be
using their mattress for 2-3 weeks while waiting for the
correct style/model. Then, they'd pick up the ones we'd been
using and give us a new set. I'm sure that they'd resell the
ones that we used in the interim and that's a used mattress
by my standards. So take it from me, just go somewhere else
if you can. Julie, the secretary, was very reasonable with
me when I spoke this morning, but unless you can get her or
her boss when you place the order, it's not worth your hassle
to go through "J.D."

Good luck.
Barbara
