IKEA has a pretty good selection where you buy the comforter and cover
separately.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
You can mail order one from DAMARK. I don't have their most recent
catalog here, but their phone is apparrently 800-729-9000. The cheapest one
is still about $100, but that's comparable to most store prices I've seen.
You can get cheaper ones, but they typically have something other than down
and feathers inside them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We bought a king-sized down-filled comfortor at Ikea and it's
so heavy that we sweat beneath it even on the very cold
nights. It's very dense...we went with the heaviest pile,
which, I think, cost somethinglike $159 or $179.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We bought a down comforter through mail order (Spiegel). On a regular basis,
you will be able to find incredible sales like: $89 any size! I will check
the catalogs we currently have at home and I will let you know what the
current sale prices are.

IKEA!

Moon run road on the way to the PIT airport, they even had them on sale
around last Christmas.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a mail order place called "The Company Store" that has good
quality (not the very best, but plenty good enough for ordinary
household use) down products at extremely reasonable prices. If you
can't find their address let me know and I will try to find it (at
home).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Be careful buying down comforters! Only consider buying comforters if
they are 100% white goose down (if it doesn't say ``white goose down'' then
it is just mixed feathers and won't hold heat well). Be sure that
comforter is baffled. I find that a square pattern holds up best. Make sure
that the thread count on the comfoter cover is 200 - 350 threads/inch -- I
find that a 100% cotton cover is best. I'd strongly recommend buying a plain
white comforter and then buying a comforter cover (it will be most comfortable
if the thread count is in excess of 200 threads/inch.) This is because you
will never or rarely want to wash the comforter (every washing reduces the heat
retention ability of the comforter.

The bad news is: in Pittsburgh, such a comforter will cost in excess of $250
(Queen size), and a comforter cover will cost in excess of $60. Kaufmann's
sells these.

However, you can buy them for much cheaper in the Washington DC area. Try
Bloomingdales (in Tyson's Corner) during their pre-Christmas sale; I was able
to buy a comforter for less than $70 and a cover for less than $20 there. They
also had great buys on 300 thread/inch count cotton sheets, which are
unavailable in Pittsburgh.
