Paul,
I had O'Leary clean and point my house a year ago.
If the mortor is uniformly out to a depth greater than 1/2
inch, and its soft and sandy, then it probably makes sense
to have the whole house pointed. For one thing if you do
spot pointing there is almost no way to match the mortar color
and if it is in a visible place on the house, well you get the
picture.
However if it is localized, perhaps due to water run
off and/or settling, then its best to fix the problem first
and then do some local repointing. We had to have a bricklayer
take down a rebuild the brick facade below a bay window that had
begun to settle away from our house. Previous owners had simply
repointed the gaps, and that is a big mistake in the long term.
O'Leary is pricey, but his crew does an excellent job.
Don't expect to see Bernie on a scaffold, but he does check in
on his work. Depending on your situation you may need to have
the brick in front of your window sills taken out, reseated so that
they drain to the front (at least nominally horizontal). If
they lean back into the house, as several of mine did they can't
simply be pointed in place. He got someone special to do that
since his pointers aren't bricklayers.
If you have any other questions just give me a call.
If you talk with Bernie, please say hi for me.
	-Dave
