After looking over all of the painter (dis)recommendations,
we decided to avoid student painters and relatives. The prices
we were quoted for our trim were from $1,800 to $3,700. We went
with the lowest cost offered by Henry Webber of Masterbrush and
were happy with the results. The rest of the results are shown below.
Good luck!

I have an uncle who does an EXCELLENT job. He has all the right tools and
spends a lot of time painting. He gets most of his work on referrals, which
says a lot on the quality of work.

His rates are competitive if not a bit cheaper.

He is Ed Rowe, and his number is 828-4384. He specializes in outdoor painting.
Mention my name, Tony Lalli, just so he knows how you heard of him.

This is only a referral to you - there's no commision involved for me.

I saved this from while Bovik was still available. I am trying Machiewicz
but he had not done the work yet.

I HIGHLY DISRECOMMEND Paul Sauers, Duffield St?, Pittsburgh. The guy
initially gave me a low estimate and then (unfairly, I think) hit me
with a high bill when the job was done. I've been fighting with him
about payment for a couple of months, and his work wasn't even that
good. See Bovik for the gory details.

I had my house trim painted by Carl Mackiewicz this summer, and was very
happy with the work he did.  He's married to one of our staff members here;
for more information, finger patty@ius2.cs.cmu.edu, or call

The Hollers (several mentions in the bovik database) are still the best if
you can get them. The old man died a couple of years back, but the sons
are still at it and still do fine work at reasonable cost.

I had a reasonably good job done by Master Brush. Their phone number is
481-2155. The guy's name is Henry Weber. He comes with a team of 3 other
painters. Their work is reasonably neat, quick and thorough, and they
don't make a mess. Their price was also reasonable. Several of my friends
have also had work done by Henry et al, without complaint.

I don't recommend them without completely reservation because I'm a very
fussy person when it comes to painting, and, if I had done the job myself,
I would have done a better job. However, I don't know if *any*
professional painters can afford to do that kind of work.

Good luck!

We had our house painted ~2 months ago by RA Frey Construction. Ron is
a general contractor and we've had him do many jobs for us. He did the
scraping and contracted out the actual painting. Ron is very good -- he
always does an excellent job. You may end up paying more for him but, if
you can afford it, he's worth it.
I think it cost ~2 grand for the house and garage (We have a HUGE house with
lots of windows -- it's the windows that make it expensive). If you want
to check out his work you can drive by our house.
1017 Sheridan Ave in Highland Park (between Wellesley and Hampton)
the house is red (it used to be blue)

I am making my living this summer as a painting subcontracter. Our
group could do your trim for less than any other professionals.

If you need any painting done, I STRONGLY disrecommend Paul Bauers,
Duffield Street, Pittsburgh. It's not that his work is so bad, but he
grossly misrepresented his estimate, and sent us a bill that was
nearly twice his original price.

We wanted two rooms painted (floor, ceiling & trim, no closets), one of
which needed to have the wallpaper stripped.
Paul Bauer's estimate: $80 per room painting
$50 per room to strip wallpaper
  		       $   for paint & materials
So I figured, OK that's probably about $250.

We received a bill for $500!! When I asked Bauers to break it down he
said that to paint each room was $130 ($80 is only for the finish
coat! - another $50 for the primer), patching and plastering was $80
per room. I asked why patch & plaster wasn't in the original
estimate, and he said, "Oh I thought you knew that was extra". Right.

I'm still arguing with the guy about his bill, but if you want to save
your time and money, DON'T hire this guy, the job wasn't that good, anyway.

I had my second story trim done last year and was very happy with the
work. The painter was Carl Mackiewicz, the husband of one of our staff
members. Call (412) 322-7714. The name of his company is Interior

In case you manage to contact the good doctor, please DO NOT take his
confident opinions about Robert Poston seriously. The person whgo
recommended this guy on bovik also sent me personal mail telling me how
great Poston was. That clearly was not the case.

We contracted Poston in July '89 to paint our home. This was to scrape
and burn the old paint off and put 2 finish coats on. He had a
self-tauted "many years" experience, so we could count on his estimate.
Well... to make a long story short, by July '90, the job was about 20%
complete (not bad huh?). He also managed to get extra $$$ out of us to
"make payroll" (long before July '90, by the way...we really aren't
total suckers).

After a couple of court sessions, we now have a $3000.00 judgement
against Poston which we will probably never be able to collect on.

Please Beware.

Hi Joanne --

My brother might be interested in the job -- he's moonlighting
as a painter to make some extra money, but he used to do it
for a living a few years ago. He's very good and very thorough
and very reasonably priced.

If you're interested, his number is 795-5447.
