I would recommend the AT&T 5200 or above.  They sound clear, have
multiple channels, and the user interface is pretty much "do the
right thing."

One of the ones in our house survived being left out in a thunderstorm,
face up (we did have to shake the water out, take it apart, dry it out
with a hair dryer, and scrape a bit of corrosion from the contacts of
the microprocessor, but it worked immediately thereafter and has for
months).

I haven't seen any cordless phone I would rather own (except for the
Motorola pocket cellular jobs, but that's a different ballgame).

Prices vary widely on these, so shop around.
