Recently I solicited the CS community for construction contractors
for 2 different types of work I'd like to have done on an old wooden
carriage house. First, I need some structural work done, ie the sill
plate needs to be replaced, and would possibly involve jacking up
parts of the structure. Next, (and possibly by the same guy) I
would like to remodel the upstairs into an apartrment.
Here are the responses I got:

I don't know about the lifting the house part, but as for the interior
work, I'd recommend McElravy Construction (Jon McElravy). He's done some
stuff for us (not finish work) that was good, and I've seen some of the
interiors (kitchens, floors) he's done and been impressed. You can probably
reach him at 466-3807.

I'm currently using a contractor call Plavchak/Wolfgang (384-3224) to do
major remodelling on my house (new walls, baths, kitchen, new electric,
gas, water -- putting a garage into the basement). So far I am very
pleased with the quality and timeliness of the work. If you call him,
mention my name.

Dave Matvey may be able to help you out.
I know he has done some work with jacking
up structures to do foundation work, although I don't know the exact
details. He also does tons of remodeling work. He recently completed work
on a house he bought in McKees Rocks, converting it into two units, with all
new mechanics, drywall, flooring, kitchens, baths, windows, siding, you name
it. The house was a total wreck when he bought it and it is amazing what he
has transformed it into.
His number is 734-1632.

I have a friend who does very nice work, and is one of the nicest
contractors I have spoken to. There is some bias in my evaluation of
his work, as he is my friend but...

  Dennis Ryan 242-5454

Give him a call, he is very responsive to his clients. Even if they are
only prospective clients.

Dale Hummel (white pages) is an excellent carpenter. He did some
general contracting for us, getting others to do the plastering/painting
and doing the carpentry himself. His work is solid. I know others have
had him remodel bathrooms, rebuild decks, and do general remodeling
and I haven't heard a bad word. He seems a bit spaced out, but he
isn't. He'll be honest with you about what is reasonable. His
favorite remark, in response to questions like "Is X possible",
was "How much do you want to spend?". Like all contractors,
he's always looking for winter work.

We had our home massively remodeled this summer, and hired Liz
Nordquist, 441-2618, as the general contractor. We were impressed with
most of the sub-contractors she hired, things turned out well, and we're
still on speaking terms with Liz :-). She was also *very* patient with
us, and quite helpful in making suggestions, steering us in directions
that would keep us close to our budget without sacrificing quality, etc.

Mike Bailey 884-8304 is good and reliable. He can definitely do the
remodeling job you describe and may be able to do the sill plate
replacement. I have seen several pieces of his work, in addition to the
one job (a roof) he has done for us.

Give my husband, Tony Pesante, a call about your foundation.
He does remodeling and maintenance (and has done work for some folks at CMU
and the SEI). He sent a guy to fix the foundation on a rental house that I
own, and I would recommend him even if I weren't married to Tony.

Your best bet is to call Tony at home early morning (not before 7:45, please!)
or early evening. 963-1493
