Here is a list of sources for roof repair. My personal problem was
a badly deteriorated slate roof, which I eventually had to replace with
fiberglas shingles. Note that several people advised me to repair the roof
rather than replace it -- but it would have cost twice the $3K I spent,
or even more, to put the roof back into decent shape. Sigh.

American Heating did our work (242-4600, ask for Gil Weil, and tell him
about Bovik). They put forth a great effort to get our roof done during
the torrential rains that plagued Pittsburgh in November, and did a fine
job. If $3K seems high, you should know that it was the low bid on a
fairly complex roof that also involved a lot of tin work and some
insulation.

The rest of the recommendations follow:

Steve, I just bought a house in Squirrel Hill, and on the recommendation of
a friend who has used them for 12 years had Shadyside Roofing, 1234
Washington Blvd, 682-0345, do the annual maintenance on the 60 year old
slate roof. They seemed competent, and the price wasn't astronomical.

The realtor I dealt with advised me that Bill Kisk Roofers, in the phone
book, understands slate roofs and is not exorbitant, while Gantner does
excellent work at very high prices. I cannot confirm or deny, since didn't
use or talk to either.

Steve,
We have had Shadyside roofers repairing our slate roof every spring
for about 8 years. They seem to fix the leaks, replace the slates that
fall off in the winter for between 1 and 2 hundred dollars. We got an
estimate for replacing the roof (using fiber glass shingles) from them
this spring for about 5K. This seemed too much although we didn't get
any other estimates. Just decided to keep on repairing it.
They do know abut slate roofs and won't walk around on it a lot and
make things worse. It may take some persistance to get them to
return your phone calls, but once you have made an appointment they
are pretty good at showing up.

I have two slate roofs and a healthy concern for their care. As you
probably know, mucking about on them can cause serious damage. One
of mine demanded considerable attention this summer and was treated
by Shook and Kassem (diff Shook, diff Ed Shook); you may contact
J. McTall at 771-6600 and mention my name. Their work was indeed
careful (working off of scaffolds, preventing any damage to the
slate) and I was quite pleased. However, the cost was considerable,
bordering on staggering. If you learn of anything, please let me
know at ijo@ce.

My parents have had some serious renovations done to our house over
the last two years, which included roof work. They have hired U.S.
Lumber ('Call Ray') as a general contractor, and everything has gone
well. They had the gutters replaced, including the boards underneath
that was rotten (the house is ~80 years old). The back roof slate was
replaced with asphalt shingles, as slate costs major league dollars.
A few of the porch and window roofs were covered with a rubber membrane,
since they were not sloped enough to use shingles. One of the membranes
was not sealed correctly the first time and the roof leaked, but they
came and repaired it (at no cost, of course) and everything has been
fine since then.
As far as cost goes, the roofs were part of a larger general contract
as I mentioned, so it's difficult to say exactly how much it cost (coupled
with the fact that I never asked my parents), but suffice it to say that
it was a good deal, as my dad is careful with his money.

By the way, if you are interested in U.S. Lumber, ask to talk to
Ray Nathan. He is the one in the slogan, and is a great guy. Besides,
my parents get $50 for the referral.

I don't remember the name of the company, but I got excellent service from
them a few months ago. The number is 731-2726, and you ask for Paul Houlahan .

steve,
i don't remember exactly the work you wanted done, but $3k seems
high to me. we had them build a new sloped roof on top of our existing
roof for about $2400.
i saw that you were looking for recommendations. american is
ok, but we are having a small problem related to the work they did, and
we'll have to have them out again. william gantner still comes recommended.
he is the most expensive, and best, roofer in the area.
kitty fisher's boyfriend michael does some roofing. give him
a call at 441 4577. he's a very nice guy. even if he can't do the
work himself, he should be able to give you a good ballpark figure as
to what it should cost, and could tell you HOW the work should be done.
so, i'd say to keep getting estimates.
