Harry, here are the (belated) results of my carpeting query from
October 1987.

Below are the replies I received. I ended up purchasing the carpet
from American Buyers Guild. The price was very right and the service
and installation were good. Ten months later, I can say that the
carpet has held up to rental use very well.

Consumer Reports says Sears has good quality carpet.
But no matter where you buy, the most important piece of
information is the finished face weight. This is the number
of ounces per square inch of carpet fibre. The higher the
better. CMU specifies a minimum of 22 ounces for carpet used
on campus. I wouldn't go below 20 ounces at home.

[Also important are the density of the tufts, both how closely packed
they are along a row and how close together the rows are. I seem to
remember a good value being 10 per inch. -rick]

The American Buyers Guild sells carpeting. The owner is a friend of my family.
Needless to say, we've never had a problem. They take of everything
(installation, removal, etc.), are quite knowledgeable about the various
products on the market, and can get you anything. Feel free to mention my
name. The number is 462-7858. They also sell appliances and furniture. Give
them a call.

I've worked twice with Wayne Freed, the Prezant rep for cmu.
He gave me great values, great work and great service.
Mention me as reference, I intend to work with hims as long
as we are both around. Freed's phone number is 731-4030.

[In general, I believe that Prezant's has a lot of poor quality carpet,
Their "industrial" quality carpet is better, however.
The salesman I spoke with (not Wayne Freed) was totally uninformed
about their products. -rick]

Roth carpet on 22 is pretty good. After shopping around we bought from them.
Don't go to Prizant's on Rodi -- their prices are outrageous, and almost go
out of their way not to answer questions.

I've bought carpeting from Prizant's carpeting twice (4 rooms
altogether). I had a good experience each time and plan to buy more
from them in the near future.
