Here are the results of my request for information on glass block windows.
Below is my original post, along with replies (slightly edited). I have
decided to go with G & J, and they are the cheapest by about 20%, although
they have been rather slow so far.

I am planning on having some basement windows in my house replaced with glass
block. After shopping around, the best price that I could get was from G & J
Glass Block and Vent Co. Sears wanted $510 for the job, Monroeville Glass
Block quoted $355, and G & J has just quoted me $268. (By the way, the win-
dows alone would cost me about $250 from Busy Beaver.) This is a huge range
of prices. Does anyone have any experience with this firm, or with any others
that they would strongly recommend patronizing/avoiding? Replies will be
forwarded to Bovik. Thanks. rick

I have had a quote done for my job by the husband of one of the CS
secretaries (Karen Olack). I have no idea how it compares, but it was
for 7 windows at $1200. --David

I had three glass block windows (one with a vent) installed in my
basement last Tuesday. They were installed by Suburban Glass Block
Company, which is a father and son outfit. They came out on a Saturday
morning to look at the job (told me over the phone that it would be
about $300), saw what the job entailed, and gave me a written estimate
of $270. In their truck they had samples of windows they assembled for
that day's installation, so I was able to see half of the workmanship up
front.

They came out Tuesday morning with the assembled windows, quickly
removed the old windows and frames (no glass broken!) and had the job
completed in under two hours, including clean-up.

The father, Russ Campbell, primarily mixes the mortar, helps in
clean-up, and otherwise assists his son. Carl does most of the work,
and he works hard.

They were very accomodating. They came out early on Saturday, by my
request, to give me an estimate. I was having a new electrical
service installed on Tuesday, so they came out extra early to make sure
one particular window was completed before the electrician arrived.

My only apprehension is that I didn't ask for a written guarantee.
They say the block is warranted for 5 years, and the labor for 1 year.
Otherwise, I am very happy with their work. I was just waiting until
the mortar completely cured before I posted a recommendation to Bovik :-)

Their address is:
		Suburban Glass Block Co.
                12709 Lincoln Way
                N. Huntingdon, PA 15642

                (412) 863-0617
                Russ & Carl Campbell

Sears and Pittsburgh Glass Block do indeed have seriously inflated
prices. Sears wanted almost $600 for the same job, this was during one
of their 1/2 off installation sales.

I used Pittsburgh Glass Block. They are a PPG authorized installer and did a
fine job. ~$90 per basement window (the short kind). Rick.
