I still have a car registered in California and wanted to get another insured and registered here in PA. Most of the insurance companies I called flat-out refused to deal with it and suggested that I just transfer my Allstate insurance to an agent here. I called the Allstate agent recommended in Bovik (Vijay Kapoor, 276-6147) but got an answering machine, so I ended up going to Don Flickinger in Monroeville (2712 Mosside, 372-5600). It worked out very well, I think (so far, anyway). Other agents I talked to wanted to know who I lived with since apparently PA law assumes that if you have a housemate without a car that they will be driving yours. By transferring from another state I apparently escaped this. The total insurance came out to $520/year (liability only, limited tort...), about what I was paying in CA, and it turns out that the premium was *less* because I had two cars - apparently the multiple-car discount comes to more than the cost of insuring the second car.
