02-Aug-91 09:47 David.Simon Short Term Health Insurance Info?
From: David.Simon@IUS4.IUS.CS.CMU.EDU

I'm looking for information regarding *short-term* health insurance options.
My current policy expires in the middle of August, and I will be covered
under another policy beginning in October. For the intervening 1.5 months
I'd like to purchase insurance which will provide sufficient protection for
major health problems. I would appreciate any (dis)recommendations for
insurance companies or specific policies. Replies will be forwarded to
Dr. Harry Q (who currently knows nothing about short term health insurance).

				Thanks - David

I got a short term policy through Robert J. Rionda, Jr. at
McKinnley Insurance (835-0436). He had a couple different
policies which were cheaper (for roughly the same coverage)
than State Farm (the only other place I called), and he was
very helpful. I think our policy was from Time Insurance Co.
We didn't file any claims under the policy, so I don't know
anything about how they are for that.

Dave, when I graduated I found myself in the same situation. The best deal
then was to take the renewal option with Blue Cross, with monthly premiums.
I got a job after two days, and immediately canceled the insurance, so I
wound up paying one month's premium.

I recall falling into the cracks like that once. If you are on CMU
student insurance, you should be able to sign up for the full year,
then cancel when the new insurance takes effect, thereby saving grief
and $$$.

Ask your current employer about extending your current insurance under
the COBRA plan.
				Hope it helps,
