I ended up going with Maryland Casualty through the "Young Insurance Agency
- 441-9007". Although there's no way to really know, it seemed that if you
had to make a claim, then M. Casualty would be easier to deal with than
State Farm. They had cheaper and better packages for lower amounts of
coverage too. For higher levels of coverage, they seemed to be slightly
more expensive. Be careful with State Farm; for low premiums you DO NOT get
replacement coverage on personal property. I suggest that you guestimate
the net replacement cost of all of your personal belongings before getting
insurance. I was astounded at how much my junk was really worth.

I've been dealing with State Farm in Squirrel Hill for the past three years
and haven't had any problems. I had one claim of about $1K my first year
with them, and it went through relatively quickly. Premiums are fairly
reasonable (~$130/year) with replacement and liability coverage.

I have State Farm renters with replacement cost. I have used it
twice, and was pleased with the response. This past year's cost was
$130, and they've paid out over $2000 to me.
With the replacement cost insurance, I called retailers for the
items I lost. S.F. gave me a pro-rated amount in cash, and up to the
declared amount when I sent in the sales slip showing that I had
replaced the item.
This is with a $250 deductable.

Scott,

I can strongly recommend AMICA for renter's insurance. Their rates are
competetive, and they give a 20-25% dividend at the end of each year.
They are also very good about paying quickly and without complaint when
you have a claim.

I have had coverage by them, and I had a (burglary) claim during that time.
They were quite fair in handling it. Also, I have subsequently worked with
the company that does (some of) their claims and adjusting, and I can
further report their fair handling.

We have State Farm. I don't remember how much it costs. We might have
gotten a good deal since we have car, etc. insurance with our agent.

Scott,

I ended up going with State Farm. They had pretty good rates, and
would cover my computer equipment. Allstate wouldn't even give me a
policy since I live in a house with more than 2 apartments (there are
3). In general I have grown to hate Allstate because of the arbitrary
policies. They aren't supposed to be too bad if they think you are a
low risk (ie. don't need insurance).

Our household has a policy with State Farm. The closest (and in
my limited experience, best) agent is Craig Evans in Squirrel Hill.
Don't be put off by his marginally competent secretary -- Craig's
a good guy.

I also know several people who have auto insurance through Craig.
If you're new to Pennsylvania, you might ask Craig for a quote on
that too.

The rate from State Farm was very good. They were also one of the
few companies that would handle more than one person on the policy.
[Last year they changed our policy to be two policies, with two
people on each, for some reason.] Our one claim (a small burglary)
was handled reasonably quickly and without hassle.

My previous renter's insurance was written with USF&G, but I forget
the broker that handled it. That was when I was living alone -- I
don't think they would write for more than one occupant at the time.
I didn't need to make a claim.

A former housemate (Jeff Koechling) had insurance through the Erie
Insurance Company, and he seemed generally pleased with them. They
also had a claim, and were hassled a little more than we were, but
their claim was more complicated.

Good luck,

			Michael

Scott,

I have a policy thru Maryland Casuality. The policy is thru an independant
broker (deals with many companies and is able to find the best deal.) and
if you want, I could look up his name and number.

Good Luck

Ed.
