I shopped around last May and got the best price from Mark Weidner,
a State Farm agent. He's out in Allison Park but it was well worth
the drive. I don't know about under 25 rates. Check the Bovik
database (finger bovik@k) for more info.

Try Pine-Madden (carrier for Ohio Casualty) in Castle Shannon.
    I don't remember their number, but they're in the book. I'm 26,
but they gave me liability on my 1980 VW Rabbit for $347/6 months.

You might want to check out Wilkinsburg Real Estate (731-1770).
I pay around $800 a year for liability, but I'm over 25.
Actually, the name changed a couple of month ago, but I think that
the phone number is still good. If it's not, tell me and I will have
a look in my papers to find the good one.
You can also try Liberty Mutual. They charged my roomate around $700
(he's over 25, too).

Check out Erie insurance, Agent Robert Bock, 863-4619.
We've used them for several years.

From: Michael.Mills@PROOF.ERGO.CS.CMU.EDU

AAA quoted me a price of $5200/yr. can you believe it?

the best rates i've found for people our age is with state farm where,
depending on liability, you should be able to get a price around $600,
maybe lower? it also depends on your car, rec, etc.
this is just a guess since insurance rates jump around so rapidly.

From: Mike.MacPherson@N.SP.CS.CMU.EDU
Try Allstate, I'm 23 and they charge me $260 for 6 months of liability
insurance.

From: "Matthew E. Olczak" <mo0d+@andrew.cmu.edu>
My insurance was hard to get also. I managed to get a deal with
Prudential (their Preferred customer plan). I'm 22 with a '68
4-4-2 (beefed up Cutlass), my first policy, and just liability.
I pay $750/yr. I added a '75 Gran Torino and it went up to $1000/yr.
You might try them, if you can get lucky you can save some dough.
If you have a sports car, though, they won't even talk to you.

You are going to get a wide range of quotes for the liability insurance,
and the rate will depend amongst other things on your driving record, the
duration for which you have had your drivers license, and the type of car.
The best method is to call various insurance agents and companies. I would
expect that the best quote would be around $300-350 for 6 months for the bare
minimum insurance required by the state.
One of the problems will be that most reasonable companies are going to have a
one month waiting period, i.e., they will write your policy only after a month
If you can't wait that long they will put you in a assigned risk pool, and
charge you accordingly. My suspicion is that the AAA rate that you quoted is

His name is Ray Snider, his number is in the yellow pages.
If you have not been insured before you might want to try
Ohio Casualty Insurance, when I first got insurance they
were the cheapest I could find, it was $800 year.

From: Charles.Fineman@H.GP.CS.CMU.EDU
I found State Farm to have the best prices. My agent is Craig Evans,
he's on Murray Ave. in Squirrel Hill across from the Eat n' Park.

From: "Marek J. Druzdzel" <md33+@andrew.cmu.edu>
The agent I am insured with was the cheapest I could find when I was looking for
my insurance. I am above 25 and my situation may be very different than yours,
but I ended up paying half as much as what AAA suggested. Here are his
parameters:
  Arthur D. Tripp, jr
  346 Bower Hill Road
  Pittsburgh, PA 15228
  Phone: (412) 341-7527
Give him a call and ask him what he can offer you.

From: Nancy.Monda@EDRC.CMU.EDU
My experience with car insurance is that the company called
Allstate is usualy the cheapest. I don't know what the rate
would be for you, but it's worth checking into because in
most cases their rates are about the best.

From: Michael Sandrof <ms5n+@andrew.cmu.edu>
$1407? For just liability? Someone is pulling your leg. I'm not paying much
more than that for liability, fire, theft, collision, uninsured/underinsured
motorist... etc. Prices I've heard for just liability range from $300 to $1000,
depending on age, type of car, previous driving record. You might want to try
Erie Insurance or AMICA. Or just go through the yellow pages, trying each
company, til you get the best price.

Some questions which affect insurance:
	1) What type of car are you insuring? (year, make, engine size)
	2) Do you have any accidents (or traffic violations) within past 3
	   years?
	3) Do you currently have car insurance?
	4) Where do you live? (City of Pittsburgh versus tiny suburb)
	5) Do you commute to work?
AAA is NOT a good place to get insurance, they quoted me the worst rates out
of all my calls. Will you turn 25 BEFORE Dec. 31, 1989. If so then I know
Nationwide will consider you a 25 year old.
If you don't mind could you let me know the answers to the above?
I just recently bought a sports car (Mustang GT) but not before making sure
I could afford the insurance. Some places quoted me $3000/year to give you
an idea of how insurance is dependent on many variables, the biggest being
age, (>25 -> 1/2 cost), type of car (sport GT, turbos are the worst), and
driving record. By the way I am NOT paying close to $3000/yr, that's
outrageous.

We've been satisfied with State Farm from Grace Robinson on S. Craig
Street. She was the best deal we could find for our situation, which
is quite different, but you might give her a try.

From: Aviad.Zlotnick@MAPS.CS.CMU.EDU
Try Angelo Dinardo (Liberty Mutual), Tel. (412) 787-7375. When AAA quoted
me 1500 he came up with 782, and has offered the best price ever since.

From: Steven.Roth@ISL1.RI.CMU.EDU
Erie Insurance Co has generally lower prices and has been rated highly by
consumer reports on many levels. They keep their rates low by not
insuring big cities (Pittsburgh is the biggest they handle).
My agent is Dave Tyson - 241-8420. Good luck.

From: Donna Fisher <df10+@andrew.cmu.edu>
The credit union undoubtedly has an NADA guide to car resale values (a blue
book). Carnegie Library should also have one. If you haven't yet found one, I
have a December 1988 guide although these guides are issued monthly. I also
have a 1986 Toyota Corolla (4 dr. sedan) for sale for $6100.00 if you're inter-
ested.

From: Robert.Joseph@CAD.CS.CMU.EDU
My insurance was a lot cheaer from State Farm than AAA. My agent is
Grace Robinson. Her number is 682 - 7383. Feel free to tell her
Robert Joseph recommended her to you. I am sure the rate will be a lot
lower.

From: "Allan K. Tear, II" <at1x+@andrew.cmu.edu>
For people under 25, especially if you have had an accident, State Farm
Insurance will be your best bet. I am paying 400/year, but I have a cheap car.

I ended up getting my basic liability insurance from Arthur Tripp,
Travelers Insurance at $325/6 months for under 25 years of age. he has
promised me $225/6 months when i turn 25 in a few months.
