With all the praise here for Craig Evans (State Farm, Squirrel Hill), I
thought I should add a caveat. My housemate and I wanted renter's insurance,
and Craig Evans seemed to be the cheapest. Unfortunately, we procrastinated
about actually getting the insurance until close to Christmas, when our
apartment would be empty for about a week. When we met with him to purchase
the insurance, he wouldn't let the policy begin until January 1! (Coverage
should begin the day you sign the policy.) He said that it was his policy
to do this for anyone who came in during the month of December, the reason
being that students would often get insurance over Christmas when they would
be gone, and then cancel it when they came back.

Since it was very important to us to be covered over Christmas, we spent
about 10-15% more at AAA. Incidentally, nothing happened over Christmas,
and we have no plans to cancel.

I should add that Craig Evans was much more thorough and seemed much more
knowledgable than the guy at AAA. I would rather have gotten insurance
through him than through AAA. So the moral of the story is, if you want
renter's insurance through Craig Evans, be sure to take care of it before
December.
