You had asked about insurance. Consumer Reports has had a lot on insurance,
rates, how much, and so on. I talked to a financial advisor, and he suggested
that I get term insurance, not whole life, and suggested American Guardian,
a Pennsylvania company. For my age (35), the rates were between 80 and 90
cents per thousand per year. (so $100,000 would cost $80 to $90 per year).
The rates go up each year, of course, but American Guardian charges a $40
a year fee for a medical exam which, if you pass, keeps your rates down.
Also, you should ask CMU about group life insurance with TIAA/CREF, which
is generally pretty good.
