Brad,

I've been with Keystone for 2 years, and I'm generally happy with it. There
is one thing about any HMO that usually causes people to lose interest. You
have to see your family MD to get referred to any other type of doctor. This
was not a problem for me, because whenever I have anything wrong, I always
consult my family MD first, and allow him to guide to me a specialist or
other professional. We've never had any problem getting them to cover the
normal problems.

I do have one complaint. I've been given inaccurate information over the
phone when I call them to clarify coverage. I was told they would not cover
my husband's eye exam, but I recently found paperwork that says they are
supposed to. They also told me that under no circumstances would they pay
for a visit to the chiropractor. I later found out that if you are fortunate
enough to have an MD that believes in them and will give you a referral, they
are supposed to cover the visit.

I made formal complaints to the Benefits office, but they are in a hugh
crunch getting the FlexPlus plans integrated, so they haven't had time to
clarify. Benefits told me that since we have it in writing that they are
supposed to cover these two items, they believe they can get Keystone to
reimburse my expenses.

If you believe in chiropractors, and plan to make use of them, perhaps this
plan isn't the right one for you. One way to be sure is to speak with your
doctor. Ask him when a referral would be appropriate. Try speaking to a
Keystone representative and ask them if there would be problems with coverage.

I found a different way around the problem. My husband and I both get
stiff necks and back aches, mostly caused by stress and tension. I just
found a new set of doctors (Beam & associates) who are Doctors of Osteopath,
so perhaps this will eliminate any need to go to the chiropractor.

The absolute best thing about it is not having to part with any money for
doctor visits, lab fees, even the prescription coverage is great. Since
joining keystone the only money I've put out of my pocket for medical expenses
is the eye exam ($24) and 4 chiropractor visits at $24 each. And it may turn
out that I'll be reimbursed for this. It is great for those of us with a
smaller salary.

Jean

I've found UHN hard to evaluate properly in conjunction with bc/bs.
Not all the doctors listed on the uhn have their practice covered
by bc/bs at all. (That's what HRS told me...)

First dollar has a $250,000 cap on lifetime major medical only, NO cap on
hospitalization.

All other BC/BS plans have $1,000,000 total cap on ALL combined expenses.
With something catastrophic, this could be a big difference!

UHN was at one time the CMU student provider. They were
truly awful and unresponsive. Their office in Oakland had
two doors, each with a sign saying:
"please use other door". No, I'm
not kidding -- I saw it for myself!
