I recently asked for pointers to Italian grocery stores other than
those in the Strip District. Here are the responses:

There are several in Bloomfield, but I can't recommend one in
particular. If you get a good recommendation, I'd be interested too.

There is a small Italian store called "Groceria Merante" on Bates St. in
Oakland, down near where Bates and the Blvd. of the Allies come together
(about a block up from the Blvd. actually). I haven't been there in awhile,
but I used to go there when I lived in South Oakland. I don't know of any
others around except for the ones in Bloomfield on Liberty (also some good
ones, but I don't know the exact names).

Mark,

There's a small Italian food store in Bloomfield, on the same side street
as the entrance to the Pleasure Bar restaurant (which is located on the
corner of Liberty Ave. and ??? St.). I don't know the store's name
(maybe the "Groceria Italiano") and can't personally vouch for the place,
but I've heard it's a nice little store. There's also a place called
Donatelli & Sons, right on Liberty Ave. in Bloomfield. There are probably
several others in Bloomfield, given that it's traditionally an ethnically
Italian neighborhood.

Hope this helps!

I was out of town last week, but I'll specifically recommend Donatelli's
on Liberty Ave. in Bloomfield. It is the best of the Bloomfield stores
I've been in. And, unlike the ones in the strip, it is open a few hours
on Sundays.
