Todd, (bovik too!)

These are the messages I received in reply to my last bboard post about
fruit and vegetable markets. A summary follows:

o Farmer's market in the parking lot of the city zoo (Highland Park).

 o Penn Circle near Sears.

 o Strip District.

 o Warehouse on Smallman Street.

 o Farmer's market in Wilkinsburg

There's a farmer's market in the parking lot of the city zoo, in
Highland Park. I believe they hold it every Monday and Thursday
evening, except during the winter; the hours are 5pm-9pm or something
like that. The city parks department should have more information,
although you might have to try several times to find somebody who
knows about it.

There are a variety of farmer's markets around the Pittsburgh area in
the summer. I think the closest is in Penn Circle near the Sears. You
can buy fruits and vegetables wholesale yearround in the Strip District.
The warehouse is on Smallman Street. You have to get their by 7 or 8am
to find anything reasonable, and earlier for the best quality.

The Strip District downtown is probably the ultimate place. But there
is also a "Farmers' Market" in Wilkinsburg that is open every Monday
and Thursday starting June 2nd. It opens at 4:00pm. It's not too big,
but they have a variety of stuff. It's one block off Penn Ave in the
downtown area.

There is a farmer's market located in the parking lot of the Pittsburgh
Zoo. It is open for the summer and into the fall. I don't know when
it first opens.

There are many produce markets around. Most of them are located in
the Strip District, near Penn Avenue, between 10th and 16th streets.
The best time to check them out is early in the morning -- they get
busy!

The Farmer's Market, in East Liberty, is open year round, and features
produce from local growers, usually very fresh and at reasonable prices.

Every saturday morning, 5am-9am, in East Liberty, behind the Sears on
Highland avenue (you can park in their lot behind the Sears building);
or if coming from the East via Penn circle, take the left on Rodman
(there's usually a wooden sign sitting on the corner that says
"Farmers Market". Not hard to find; usually the only action going on
this early in the morning.

I'm interested in what other answers you get, especially if you hear of
any sources of organic produce.
