This is a compilation of the responses on a request for recommendations on
electric shavers. My original post is included first.

I could add that my own experience from comparing electric shavers (dating
20 years back) places Braun in a class of itself ahead of Norelco and
Remington.

18-Jun-91 11:01 Ingemar.Hulthage Electric Shaver recommendations ?
From: Ingemar.Hulthage@ISL1.RI.CMU.EDU

To give my son a, not so subtle, hint that he needs to start shaving
periodically, I decided to give him an electric shaver at his birthday.
However, I have been using razors for the last 15 years and have no idea of
what's a good choice today. Suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ingemar

Ingemar,

The Braun line of electrics is wonderful. I have been using electrics
for 15 years and my current Braun is incredible. It easily has the
closest shave of any electric I have used and I never ever get razor
burn. I suggest spending the little bit extra and getting a
rechargable one for added convenience.

I like Phillips' Norelco myself. I've had one for 15 years, it broke
last week, and I had it repaired the same day for $15. They have
rotary "floating heads", which supposedly give a closer shave.

The Braun shavers seem much better than the American models...

Depending on how old your son is (and consequently how soft his beard)
this may not be a good idea. I remember in my teens that such a monster
had chewed my face quite a bit.
Now I use a rotary recheargable by Norelco and I am very happy with it
(sells around $60). I have had it for 7 years and only changed blades
once. It rarely causes me some slight skin irritation.
I dislike the palindromic ones. The frequently make large red marks
at the soft skin near the throat (they may be useful to make a girlfriend
jealous :-) ).
Hope these help,
Dionysis

Especially for the tender-faced, buy a Braun. It took me a few shavers
to learn this lesson.

My wife bought me a Norelco rechargeable (battery) electric razor two
years ago that has worked wonderfully since then. She probably got it
someplace like Kaufmann's.

I used to use a Remington microscreen. They are noisy and give an acceptable
shave only. I recently (when my rechargable lost that feature) bought a
Norelco (905RX is the model, I believe) triple head rotary. I am much
happier with it. It give a good shave and the model that I have has an
adjustment for hair length. I find this important for situations where
the hair has gotten somewhat long. I do one pass at a high setting and
then do one at a closer setting to get a better shave. The Norelco
is much quieter and has a pop-up trimmer. I would recommend it over
the Remington.

Norelco "Lift-And-Cut". You can get mains-operated ones (with 3
rotating heads), or rechargeable ones (with 2 rotating heads). I
bought a rechargeable, simply to allow me to shave anywhere I want to.
Very happy with it; its a great improvment over the first electric
shaver I bought (again, a rechargeable, but with a single "bar" head
that does an awful job of actually shaving the face). In fact,
Norelco have actually had ads out since I bought my model saying that
their new ones are even better, shave even closer, etc. grrrr.... :-)

Hope this helps,
Jonathan H.

Consumer Reports did an article on electric shavers a couple of years back.
You should be able to find it in the library.

The standard brands seem to be Norelco and Remington. They're
somwehat different mechanically, with the Norelco having rotating blades and
the Remington a back-and forth set of blades, but they both seem to shave
at about the same closeness. Which one you get depends mainly
on how you like the feel of the different types, IMO. I use
a Remington because I find it easier to handle, though a
Norelco may be easier to clean.

You can get them in cord or rechargeable cordless models. I've always used
the cord models myself; I tried an early cordless and it didn't hold the
charge very well. But they may have improved
things since then.

Please excuse the typos- I'm on a slow incoming line.

The standard choice is the bottom-of-the-line Braun (1000?).

Ingemar--

For a begining shaver I recommend the Norelco Rotary (two or three
head design). Easy to use, doesn't pinch, blades are user replacement
parts available just about anywhere (when they finally do get dull
after about a year or two). I still have the one that my dad gave me
back in 1968 -- it still works fine, although these days I wear a
beard, anyway :-).
